First things first.
The Godfather is one of the greatest movies ever made.
Point made. Continue ...
way to go, RGV,
way to go, SARKAR
Considering the fact that RGV had nothing to gain but everything to lose by remaking this classic, I must say that the desi adaptation of Godfather is as good a movie as a remake can be! RGV makes it clear in the opening reel itself that this is 'inspired' by the Godfather and there are no claims on originality. But it is in the way that it has been adapted to the Indian lifestyle that this movie stands out.
Remaking a movie which was a cult with Brando and Pacino with one of their best performances was never going to be a piece of cake. But RGV has done it and how!
Without revealing the entire story, I would just say that this is a story of a leader, a person who is a leader of the common man and who is despised by the bribery affected rungs in indian (rather bombay) politics. In a sense it is a war between good and evil, so it does deviate from the original. However, it is also a story where the family is the core. So in essence, SARKAR is as identifiable to the common indian as dal-chawal, the auto rickshaw and the local panwallah - it's something you see anywhere.
Watch the movie to see the way direction can break/make a movie and the way the acting can elevate a movie beyond what heights the script can take it to! This is vintage RGV stuff after a long time.
the performances:
Amitabh: the GOD, the LEADER, the TORCHBEARER, the ANGRY MAN, the SARKAR. No BigB, no SARKAR.Period. He has the aura that is so essential in such a movie. Even without uttering a dialogue, he commands respect.
Abhishek: our very own Al Pacino!! the small B actually makes you look at him in the scenes with his father!! sign of change in times, eh??!!
KayKay: the third angle in this movie - he compliments the 2 B's excellently!
Ramgopal Varma: though he hasn't acted in the movie, he deserves mention in the way he hasmade this movie. The close ups, the lighting, the background score, the performances and most importantly - no songs - .way to go!!
