I watched this movie (7 times) a couple of weeks ago but just couldn’t resist reviewing it
A little something about the movie
Cast: vivek oberoi, rani mukherjee
Direction: shaad ali
Production: bobby bedi
Music: A R Rahman
The plot as everyone knows it
Rich dude, not so rich dudette, fall madly in love with each other after a couple of visual treats, face familial opposition, elope and tie the knot and yes, live miserably ever after.
Interesting?
Well for those of you who haven’t seen this movie, it is a very simple plot, simple characters yet fantastic picturisation. The story and screenplay are tight and Shaad (formerly mani ratnam’s assistant) on his directorial debut has quite a punch. Although, it is undeniable that he has produced a good ditto of the Tamil original(alaipayuthy).
Performance:
Vivek oberoi delivers a noteworthy performance. In pramod mahajan’s words, ‘he had the right company, he was on the right road and then got the right sathiya’. There is this alacrity about him that is very pleasing.
Rani mukherjee , who incidentally bagged the special jury award(screen videocon) for her performance fit her role to the tee.
I bet no one else would have done justice to that role. A down to earth, practical, sweet beautiful doctor.
Satish Shah as vivek’s stringent father, Swarop Sampath as his mother, Sandhya as rani’s sis and Tanuja as rani’s mom all put up a great show.
Overall:
The basic idea is that love is about passion and fire (initially), but marriage is a lot more than that. Eventually when the fire dies down and the passions cool off, you need to have something else to fall back on. The arising fights, the blames, the injuries bleeding without wounds, being there for each other, not being there for each other, changing colours, changing perspectives.
Everything is portrayed to perfection, so explicitly.
The way each guy would like zoom the streets with a hep chick who smokes and plays along with everything he does all the time, but when has to settle down in life, he will want a feminine devoted person. He is all over her while wooing her and getting her to say yes for his proposal. he is all hugs and kisses and letters and calls and messages, but once married he finds it unreasonable and embarrassing to embrace his wife in front of people. The manner in which once rani’s dad expires, everything just seems wrong and the way both just automatically blame themselves for it, end up fighting. It is like, once there is a crack,
The whole lot seems wrong.
Having watched the original, I think shah rukh and tabu made a very improbable pair. They were meant to portray a resolute, more mature and ripened love but the two of them came short of it(unlike arvind swami and khushbo in the original).their presence leaves us unperturbed.
Yeah, there are a few hackneyed ideas, like eloping and getting wed and rani opening her eyes as vivek urges her to in the ICU. I mean common, if this were true every hospital can leave the patient on the deathbed to speak with their spouses and they would be sure to gain consciousness. what do you say???!!
No didhum dishum, just the right amount of romance and humour all set amidst loads of biting reality.
Music:
The music is just awesome. Top class and topping the charts. A R Rahman, the Mozart of madras does it again with
mera yaar mila de, sung by himself and
naina mila ke.
The rest of course are remade and are excellent.
Sadhna sargam bagged the best singer(screen videocon), beating all time winner alka yagnik for the tantalizing chupke se
Adnan Sami adds his characteristic touch to aye udi,
Kaykay and Shaan do a great job on o humdum,
Sonu Nigam is impeccable with hasti rahe tu hasti rahe.
What can I say about the epitome of perfection in singing Asha Bhostle who teamed up with current tamil heartthrob karthik onchori pe chori
To cut a long story short
It is a welcome break from a designer romance and clichéd foreign locales.
Acting is good, direction, screenplay, dialogues are a carbon copy o the Tamil counterpart, nonetheless are entertaining. Honestly it is much more sensible and enjoyable than KKHH and KKKG
Do fill me in what you think about it
