The marking of one of the most well known and best music composer's, A.R. Rehman's debut album is truly brilliant. I love Roja songs, originally in tamil but then sung again in hindi, telugu, and malyalam, because of the dubbing of the movies.
Roja's tunes are very sweet and soft. No huge orchestras are used. Rehman has used very liitle instrument and marvelous tunes.
The album starts of with Minmini singing the sweet and pleasant, Chotti Si Asha. The tune of this song is meant to capture your heart with its meaningful and fun loving lyrics and its beautiful tune. Minmini has sung this song at her best. I also like the flute in this song a lot. I love this song and would give it 4.5/5.
The next track, Rukmani Rukmani is also nice featuring Baba Sehgal and Shweta who have done great justice to the song. The chorus in the song are very good sounding like children when they go, “Oooooooooooooooo” and not many instruments are played but yes the drums are very nice in the song. I’ll give this song a 3.5/5.
“Roja Janeman, Tu hi mera dil, Tujh bin tarse naina” sung by one of my favourite singers, S.P. Balsubrabramanium straight from the heart with Chitra occasionally going “Aaaaaaaaaaa”, this is my second favoutite song in the album. I just love the slow yet stomping tune . I’ll definitely give it a 4.5/5.
The 4th song, Yeh Haseen Vadiyan Yeh khula Asman is my favourite song in Roja. The song haunts you right from the start with the harp and the chorus humming and then Chitra at her career best also haunts you with her singing paired beautifully with S.P. Balsubramanium. I think this was A.R. Rehman best song ever! This track definitely gets a 5/5. It’s perfect.
The next song is once again Roja Janeman but with Hariharan singing it. He also sings this beautifully but I still think S.P. B. was better. Otherwise it’s practically the same song except with one difference. In the other one it is, “Roja Janeman, tu hi mera dil” and the Hariharan goes, “Roja Janeman, tu dil ki dhadkan.” Again this song also deserves 4.5/5.
A patriotic song belonging to Hariharan because of his vocals. The song is called Bharat humko Jaan Se Pyaara Hai with the chorus singing the hard tune every time Hariharan finishes a verse. I’ll give this song 4/5.
When I bought the CD of Roja, I also got all the instrumental versions of all the songs, and I loved them too. The flutes in all of them are giving life just like the vocals and all are heart rendering.
In conclusion, one wouldn’t think this is a debut album. It’s definitely worth your money. I also would like to say that the lyricist of the album is P.K. Mishra. However, I don‘t know whether he just translated it from tamil lyricist Vairamuthu, but whoever has written the lyrics sure deserves credit.
I thank Mouthshut for adding this in the website and I promised that I would write a review on it .
