SPOILER ALERT
The latest Star Wars offering Rogue One creates the setting for the first Star Wars movie which was Star Wars: A New Hope.
Rogue One comprises of a group of motley rebels, ordinary people with extraordinary passion who manage to find the plans of the Death Star. The Death Star is a powerful weapon used by the Galactic empire to destroy any planet or area within seconds. It’s like Golden Eye of James Bond or an atomic bomb bazooka.
In Rogue One, Galen Erso, a scientist who has retired to be a farmer is forcibly taken back to the labs by the Imperial Director Krennic, to complete Death Star. Galen’s daughter Jyn goes into hiding and emerges 15 years later to find her father and lead the minuscule rebel group called Rogue One which finds the plans of Death Star and transfers the information to other rebel groups. This information eventually reaches Princess Leia at the end of the movie. This story continues into the original trilogy of Star Wars when Leia gets captured by the Empire for being part of the Resistance and hides the information in the droid R2D2 which her lost brother Luke finds out. Luke is eventually responsible for destroying the Death Star.
Felicity Jones who plays Jyn probably gets the most screen time, any female character has got till date in any of the movies. She is just like Ray who appeared in the last Star Wars offering The Force Awakens in 2015. Feisty, smart, fearless and sensible, Jyn realizes that she has to go for the plans of Death Star created by her father and his team. Her father’s last wishes were to destroy this invincible weapon which he had already planted in it. Cassian Andor(Diego Luna), a rebel officer starts believing in her mission even when the peaceful rebel group opposes the whole idea. Jyn’s rescuer as a child was another radical rebel leader Saw(Forest Whitaker) whose plundering terrorist group is at loggerheads with the peaceful group to which Cassian belongs. But it seems everyone has a soft corner for Jyn and ultimately unites to fulfill her vision. Rogue One echoes and reflects modern civilization where entire cities and planets are destroyed to exterminate rebel factions.
The actor who had played Governor Tarkin(Peter Cushing) in the original trilogy is dead in reality but special effects revive this formidable villain in Rogue One. I think Darth Vader is severely wasted in this movie appearing with a weird bee like mask wielding his red light sabre against weak hapless rebels. Well, he is kind of the face of Star Wars so I get it.
I somehow feel, this movie is the weakest of all the Star Wars movies till date and is only saved by the fact that it is a very important chip in the history. It also shows the undying spirit of rebels bringing to mind Morpheus and his group in The Matrix trilogy. Watch it and cheer it for girl power.
