The Plot
*Honest, sincere yet ruthless encounter specialist Suryakanth(RANDEEP HOODA) and his crack team of specialists are on a shooting spree, cleansing Mumbai of money laundering underworld baddies. He has his hands full tackling two of the most dangerous gangs - one lead by Naidu(ZAKIR HUSSAIN, not the tabla player!) and another lead by the powerful Khalid(VINOD KHANNA) who are always at loggerheads with each other.
Inspite of the growing troubles and deadly encounters with these gangs, Suryakanth also has feelings for his actress girlfriend Shraddha(TANUSHREE DUTTA) but is unable to have an intimate relationship with her due to his constant battles with the dons in the city.
Trying to stop him is Chief Minister(SEEMA BISWAS) and the Police Head of the city because they are close allies of Khalid who's mostly living in Thailand with his extended family.
Suryakanth is on an impossible mission to eliminate both gangs and realises the risk of death staring at his face. Will he cower and back away or jump right into the line of fire and live for another day?
*My Review
*How many encounter movies have relesed during all these years? Frankly, I'm not much into these genres. I only recall watching RGV's Satya which was good. There were others too which made big news like Nana Patekar's Ab Tak Chappan or perhaps Shool.
I think there's been a gradual, steady shift in the tastes of the Indian audience to watch movies that focus more on love, friendship, relationships or that like Rang De Basanti or Lage Raho Munnabhai that could brilliantly carry a social message and entertain us as well. In such times, how many people are left to accept hardcore, violent cop movies like Risk? The movie is good, no doubt. It isn't good enough for me to praise it immensely but its good! However, I'm pretty positive that it wouldn't make much money thanks to the unbelievable plot and sheer violence. Family audience will stay miles away and the only types who might venture, or should I say, risk watching these movies are the youth or plain movie buffs.
There's just this one song in the movie - an item number kind of Tanushree Dutta. But no good music or cool steps.
Yet the director Vishram Sawant handles the movie admirably well till the end. The movie begins with a bang and continues with almost the same fervour throughout. Somewhere through, we keep wondering why nobody makes an attempt to assassinate our hero. And there are quite a few more instances where we left truly unconvinced with the situations. But as they say, yeh to movie hai bhai. Dimaag phenk de or dekh le, bus !
Randeep Hooda is tops. With the mooch & muscles, he looks utterly macho and gives a gritty, raving performance.
Maybe this is a cons - barring Randeep, we cannot think of anybody else's performance. Everyone including Vinod Khanna, Seema Biswas and the other baddies play their roles realistically well but that's about it. Their acts don't linger in our minds due to the constant attention the camera gives to the lead actor Randeep.
What was Tanushree Dutta doing in the movie?
Was she only frowning at Randeep's risks or did she have more of a role to do.What the heck, I wish I could gorge on those chubby cheeks:)
The dialogues are kept in control so are the performances of the entire cast - another major credit for the director. The man knows how to guide everybody.
But coming back to the plot - it disappoints because it's unconvincing. The climax inside a heavily guarded central prison left many eyebrows raised. What a risk our script writers took! Irrespective of the intensity in Randeep's performance or the engaging pace of the movie, Risk will dangle unsteadily at the box office, thanks to its story.
And I'm not sure how many of us can stomach the violence here. The revolvers had a field time exhausting our good mood! It's not bad and its not sad. But truth be told, we dont want just another hardcore encounter cop story.
Director -Vishram Sawant
Year -2007
Starring- Randeep Hooda, Vinod Khanna, gorgeous Tanushree Dutta(sorry da, but again what was she doing?!)
Verdict~ Sorry Randeep, you rocked man but even you know it ain't worth the risk when your bullets do a better item number than Dutta dear.
