The King of Modern Comedy Rowan Atkinson makes a brilliant return in Jerry Zucker’s movie ‘Rat Race’. Well, facing the exam blues, this is one movie that can make you forget your troubles and have you rolling over with laughter. John Zucker has certainly come up with an impressive star cast consisting of Rowan Atkinson, John Cleese, Breckin Meyer, Whoopi Goldberg and Seth Green among others.
Wealthy Business Tycoon Donald Sinclair owns a Casino in Las Vegas. To maintain the steady flow of his multi-millionaire regulars; he comes up with a high stakes betting game…a Race. Six teams of contestants set out on a race to a distant place where two million dollars of price money awaits the winner. The race consists of Rowan Atkinson and the rest of the star cast as they pull out all stops and resort to every dirty trick in the book to achieve the Grand Prize. But what they don’t know, is that their event is under constant surveillance by Donald and his Mega Rich Customers who have placed high stakes bets on the outcome of this Rat Race. Well, the movie is not much about stories; I would say that it is more about characters. Well, as was expected Rowan Atkinson greatly out shadows the rest, but credit to the others must be given cause they have overall put up a pretty good performance. Some of the highlights of the movie were some rather funny {some might consider it crude} comments by Rowan about the backside. Another thing would be the rather hilarious outcome of putting him in a truck that is carrying human organs for transplant. And, of course, in pure Bean fashion Rowan seems to be afflicted with a strange disease of falling asleep on his feet. So, basically the movie is all about who wins this Rat Race, well, I’m sure you wont be able to figure out this rather cool climax, so go and watch the movie.
A thoroughly enjoyable movie overall; though I personally feel that Rowan Atkinson could have been used more. A Complete Family Entertainer.
