Ramana, opens up with the kidnap of about 15 District collectors. After about three days one of the collector is killed by the kidnappers and along with the body of the collector police finds a bunch of files which gives details of the bribe amount taken by each of the kidnapped collector. Police also finds a note from kidnappers stating that the murdered collector is the one who is highly corrupt amongst the other kidnapped collectors. The note is signed by ACF - Anti Corruption Force and it also states that they are going to continue kidnapping corrupt government officials from every department.
Police tries to give protection to government officials, however while the entire police department is busy protecting government officials 15 Police inspectors gets kidnapped. Entire police department is busy trying to hunt out the kidnappers. One of the constables (Yugi Sethu) has a doubt that the kidnappers has a link with honest government officials from all the departments who gives them the information about the corruption in their respective department he tries to pass on this information to his superiors but he is subdued by his superiors stating that he is just a constable.
Spree of kidnapping and murder continues, the master mind behind this is Ramana (Vijayakant) who is a victim of corruption. Ramana who takes care of orphaned children has lost his wife (Simran) and daughter to corruption to take revenge and to wipe out corruption from society he forms ACF - Anti Corruption Force and tries to eliminate corruption by killing the most corrupt person.
The logic behind this is, if the most corrupt person in one department is killed, officials in other department will have a fear for life and will try not to be the most corrupt person and this fear will totally eliminate corruption. This logic works till the time an underworld don (Vijayan) starts threatening officials that Ramana will kill them only if they become the most corrupt official, however if they refuse to accept his bribe and do his work he will kill them immediately. So the officials for fear of their life accept bribes.
To teach the underworld don a lesson Ramana kidnaps 15 underworld persons and kills the underworld don. When police tries to hunt for Ramana by arresting all his followers, Ramana agrees to surrender provided his followers are released. Ramana surrenders and gets death sentence. Chief minister comes and assures Ramana that he will try his best to get him pardoned from death sentence.
Does Ramana get pardon or does he get death sentence, what happens to those children who are under Ramana's care, Ramana will provide answers to all these questions.
Ramana, directed by Murugadoss, Music Illayaraja. Performance wise Vijayakant has given a fantastic performance. The role of Simran is so miniscule that it seems she has been wasted in the movie. Illayaraja's score as usual is just melodious. Overall a movie with a different theme and presented in a totally different way.
BEST SCENE
The scene where Ramana to prove corruption prevailing in private hospitals, brings in a dead body from a government hospital and tells the doctors of the private hospital that his brother had a fall and gone unconscious he pleads to the doctor to save his brother AT ANY COST.
Outcome: The doctors with an intention of making money acts as if giving treatment for almost 20 hours and then says that inspite of their best efforts and Ramana's having spent almost Rs. 3 lacs (Rs.300,000) they could not save the person.
Result: Ramana proves by flashing out the Death Certificate issued by the Government hospital, that the patient who was treated for almost 20 hours was dead even before admitting and he asks the hospital for refund of the money spent by him with a compensation of Rs.20 lacs (
Rs.2000,000).
CONCLUSION: In a nutshell, if each and every state in India has even one Ramana, we can expect India to be a corruption free country.
