Rajdhani-Jayanagar (Bangalore Central)
The emergence of Rajdhani in the food court scene has been very promising. Backed by rave reviews & a packed house on most occasions similar to that of a Rajinikanth starrer is a dream run for the owners & a “pack your bag & go home” sort of experience for the competition. “Rajdhani this! Rajdhani that! reached my ears many times & I finally made time to be there for lunch on a weekday last week.
All the tables were occupied except for a four seater, which soon became ours. The rest who followed us had to wait outside for their turn. Maroonish boutique print on the wall & bright yellow lighting make the décor. Rajdhani did not offer us a chance to fiddle with the crockery or play tabla on the table as food started flowing right from the minute we were seated. The small cups were filled in a jiffy with Varuval, Tomato kofta, Potato curry, Mutter Paneer, Sweet Dal, Kadi & Spicy dal. The gravies were followed by Mutter roll & Tri colored Dhokla, accompanied by tamarind chutney & pudhina chutney. Coin size Kerala sweet parotas, Phulka & Bajra roti were already knocking the door as dhokla managed its way down the food pipe.
The soft Pulkas were excellent & were edible even without the mediocre mutters & koftas. Bajra rotis were served with jaggery & butter. Hot, but flavorless kichidi was next in line along with dry & undercooked rice. The sweet dal was below average, the kadi was nothing but unseasoned morekuzhambu & the spicy dal was watery. We reached the climax with curd rice & a sweet of our choice. Quantity was filling, but the basic quality attributes that make a wholesome meal were unfulfilled. The wait staff was friendly in general, but some had no clue about the offerings. We were offered a colonial facility to wash hands, but I chose the wash room instead as I live in a democratic setup.
The concept of serving unlimited food is not Rajdhani’s brain child, yet it stands tall due of the lack of a smart competition. Is this glory just a fad? , Will Rajdhani live to see generations? Only time & the birth of new ideas will play judge, until then I will use it like BSNL of the Pre-Airtel era.
