Well if you've been in Mumbai eating a thali is nothing new.
However there is a relatively new joint which serves only thali.
Welcome to Rajdhani.
I recently visited the place with family for a sumptous treat.
Since the place is vegetarian it was a good choice to begin with only the experience was not that great.
The plates with innumerable small bowls is already laid out at every table before you even get there. (GOd only knows for how long they have been laying there !!!)
There must've been only a split second difference between us taking the seats and food being served in our plates.
They believe in quick service, alright, but how quick is quick enough to digest.
In a matter of seconds (are they trying to set a world record??) the plate was full with chatnis, starters, vegetables, rotis, butter milk and papad.
The most shocking was when we were even served dessert in the same breath.
I chose to have hot gulab jamuns - which were obviously cold by the time I got to them. They just lay at the table which I tried to finish my food.
What is the hurry dude!!!
Mostly one complains in a restaurant when the service is too slow but here is a complete contrast.
I think I have figured out the reason why or at least what I think is the reason. USually when you see a buffet laid out, your appetite goes for a toss and you really can't eat too much. The same philosophy applies here. With your plate so full, you just can't eat much. And since it is an unlimited thali, the hotelier is just saving on someone making the most of it. Or should I say eating the most of it.
Also there was nothing on the menu that tasted exceptionally yummy. Isn't that really sad.
One might not eat so many things at home at the same time but at least a few dishes that one can savour are better than too many.
It is a question of quality than quantity. I guess that is one of the reasons I did not relish this meal at all.
The butter milk was the only thing that was delicious and thank God for that.
After having food that didn't taste all that great, at least there was butter milk to wash it down with.
The decor of the restaurant is quite ok, nothing to write home about.
Also since PIzza hut is right next door, Rajdhani has borrowed their tradition of ringing the bell on your way out and the waiters scream "aao jo" (come again) in unison.
Nothing original ... quite disappointing.
