Simaltaneously Dravid impressed selectors with his reliability and his supreme technical prowess as a batsman. Dravid's sheer consistency and his fantastic hard working ethos made his inclusion in the 1996 squad to England, a breath of fresh air. After a hard fought 95 on debut against England, Dravid had booked himself permanently into this Indian squad for many years to come. Technically proficient against pace and spin, Dravid s often solid yet patient batting continued to delight the traditional cricketing supporters, and frustrate the young modern viewer.
Nicknamed ''The Wall'' for his excellent technique, Rahul Dravid was an in and out member of the one day team, despite being a permanent member in the test team. To his credit, Dravid continued to improve his game, and is now regarded as a pivotal part in the current ODI team, where he plays the role of a Michael Bevan type anchor/finisher and also the crucial role of the wicket keeper. But there is no doubt, that the importance of Rahul Dravid in this Indian lineup is just about as important as Sachin Tendulkar's presence. Dravid's experience and newfound confidence has won many matches for India and he remains a vital part of the Indian team's makeup. An average of over 50 in Tests and a shade under 40 in ODIs plus his fine wicket keeping ability proves his worth to any international side.
His first Test century (148) duly arrived against South Africa in Johannesburg the following January as Dravid settled into the role of anchor man in the middle order.
Known as ''The Wall'', it was Dravid who kept VVS Laxman company at Calcutta against Australia last year, hitting a painstaking 180 to complement his partner's more dashing 281.
In the one-day game, he shared a stand of 318 with Sourav Ganguly, against Sri Lanka during the 1999 World Cup at Taunton - his contribution was 145 from 129 deliveries.
