I am a great fond of Mani Ratnam and seen all of his Hindi movies from Roja to Guru. Not me only, there is a huge fan following of Mani Ratnam”s movies in all of India. But this time Mani disappoints and disappoints badly. He is known to be a master storyteller who weaves the characters around the story. However story slips from Mani”s hand in Raavan. You can watch the whole movie and in end of show come out confused that what he wanted to tell. Is it good versus bad or vice versa?
He should be grateful to his cinematographer Santosh Shivam, who at least made this film endurable. What went wrong and where, did Mani expect too much from Abhisek Bachhan or Junior Bachan has portrayed the role, which he was not entitled or in better words competent. His character as Beera required lots of shades and mental conflicts, which he failed to deliver. Whose fault was that directors or actors nobody could be sure?
No doubt Mani has worked very hard on locations and sets are definitely marvelous but again where is the story. Vikram as a violent cop was fully wasted, his role has not given the enough footages. Sharp editing is a good thing but not this kind of editing where you cannot join the sequences, where it looks you have collected the scenes and joined them as a film.
Ashwriya is just passable; in the end she showed some sparks otherwise she was just doing her role. If a talented actor like Govinda was hired then he should be given enough presence, there was not more then four or five scenes of Govinda in the film. I wonder, why at first, he had accepted this manicure role. National award winner actress Priyamani just comes and disappears without leaving any impact on viewers. Rahman”s music is again just as passable, his pair with Gulzar has not produced any memorable number.
So all and all this is the weakest film of the strongest team. Instead of locations and sets Mani would have given priority to the story and acting. Best of luck for nexttime...... .
