When a person who does not belong to any group or doesn’t has a godfather in the industry but still propels people to judge his work, this gives a clear signal that this person has started his journey on the path of success. Shahid Kapoor is one such name whose latest movie ‘R…. Rajkumar’ has created some stir among the cinema lovers prior to its release.

Well, the film has finally hit the theaters and it’s time for the viewers to give their feedback post the interest created by the makers with some good marketing, which has now became a mandatory part and parcel of any film. But the fate of the film relies heavily on the taste of the public, which too is very weird as I still wonder how come Chennai Express became a big hit?

‘R…. Rajkumar’ directed by Prabhudeva is love story set is Bharatpur where business of opium is the main reason behind the war between the gangs of Ashish Vidyarthi and Sonu Sood. A deal is confirmed in Hong Kong by another dealer Srihari but how will he get the opium out of India?

Shahid Kapoor comes to Bharatpur & joins the gang of Sonu Sood after saving his consignment from the rival gang. Both Shahid Kapoor & Sonu Sood falls in love with Sonakshi Sinha who happens to be Ashish Vidyarthi’s neice. The trouble begins when Ashish Vidyarthi fixes the marriage of Sonakshi with Sonu Sood. Shahid Kappor revolts.

What happens next? Well, no prize for guesses please because any first standard kid knows two plus two is four.

Neither the story written by Prabhudeva offers anything new nor the screenplay co-written by Sunil Agarwal, Ravi Sundaram & Prabhudeva adds anything special to it as they have preferred to follow the tried & tested formula throughout. The flavor they have chosen is of South Indian masala, which unfortunately hasn’t worked out to perfection completely but works intermittently. Dialogues by Shiraz Ahmed are targeted at single screen viewers.

Background music by Sandeep Chowta gels well with the mood of the film. Music by Pritam is no different even though it has some foot tapping songs.

Performance wise Ashish Vidyarthi and Srihari are strictly ok. Sonu Sood’s character is a cusp between a clown & a villain though he excels in action sequences. Sonakshi Sinha is becoming stereotype as her performance has become predictable.

Shahid Kapoor though doesn’t possess the personality required to play the role of Rajkumar but does extremely well. Thanks to his belief in the character he was playing where his hard work is crystal clear evident.

Director Prabhudeva has chosen the run of the mill stuff where he did try to incorporate some twists & turns, which unfortunately doesn’t give a shock. His storytelling has no novelty either though he has tried his best to bring in song sequences and action sequences at regular intervals, which seems to be the strength of the film in a nutshell.

In short, ‘R…. Rajkumar’ had everything in the favour of the film prior to its release but post release the picture doesn’t appear to be that rosy. Not that the film is a complete let down because it does has its moments and with the taste of public being unpredictable, it might succeed due to the controlled budget of 40 crores. Watch it if you love foot tapping music and well picturised action sequences.
