The Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood, Aamir Khan is famed for being too picky or choosy in signing films. The reason is obvious that he wants quality films to work in and this is exactly what he had done in his last release. For the past several years,Aamir has had just one release per year or two. And no doubt, because of his obsession with quality cinema, most of them turned out to be blockbusters at the Box Office,be it Dhoom 3(2013),Talaash(2012),3 Idiots(2009),Ghajini(2008) or Taare Zameen Par(2007)
His last superhit high grossing PK(2014) is one such movie which promises a joy ride from space on to Earth and the lesson that an extra terrestrial aka Alien could teach us humans which we regularly practice but fail to understand.
Plot:-
Somewhere in the desert of Rajasthan,an Alien spacecraft drops a humanoid being (Aamir Khan). This humanoid is exactly human in appearance except that it does not wear clothes initially. He first encounters a human who steals away the greenish round device he wears around his neck to call back the spacecraft. This leaves him permanently stranded on Earth.
At the same time,5000 KM away in Belgium,Jaggat Janni aka Jaggu(Anushka Sharma) andSarfaraz(Sushant Singh Rajput) meet for the first time and fight over tickets for a show featuring both Harivanshrai Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan*,Jaggu and Sarfaraz who are big fans of respectively. They fall in love but Jaggu realizes that the biggest obstacle in this case would be her family since Sarfaraz is a Pakistani Muslim.
Eventually,Jaggu decides to inform her family and they are shocked by her decision. Her father (Parikshit Sahni)decides to consult a godman, Tapasvi Maharaj(Saurabh Shukla) who states that he being a Pakistani would deceive her.Worse, she even receives a letter from Sarfaraz stating that since their religion/caste is a hurdle in their path, they need to part ways.
Six months later,Jaggu, while working in a News channel spots this alien whom everyone calls PK(Aamir Khan) wearing a helmet and distributing pamphlets of various God's photos with the caption'Missing' at the metro station. He then deliberately gets arrested by the police and then Jaggu follows up and has a long conversation with him at the jail, through which he explains his entire story, which leaves Jaggu puzzled and skeptical.
He tries to fit into human customs and tradition by wearing clothes of all kinds and handling money, until accidentally knocked down by bandmaster Bhairon Singh(Sanjay Dutt). He deliberately tries to gain information from people by holding their hands, which is mistaken for him to be a pervert.
One peculiar but important feature of human civilization and culture which captivated him is religion or the belief in God(s).This is so since he is in desperate need of getting back his device to summon back the spacecraft and everyone he meets only ends up saying'Bhagwan teri madat kare' or God help you. He first prays to Gods at Temples but to no avail of any help.Next,he goes to Churches,Mosques and Gurudwaras and leaves no stone unturned in worshipping the Gods in various different ways as per its adherents but the same story repeats. What is amusing is that he tries to blend one belief with the other, only to escape getting beaten up by angry mobs of various faiths chasing him.Another amusing part is that he questions various practices and beliefs which people normally do but nevertheless thought provoking when questioned. He wonders that since people belong to various faiths, they might be having a stamp sealed on their bodies from birth.
Jaggu uses this as an advantage to expose Tapasvi Maharaj,as he is believed to be a medium of communication between the common man and God. She takes the help of PK and her News channel, although her boss,Cherry(Boman Irani) was initially skeptical of PK until he met PK.As expected,PK creates problems for Tapasvi by his mind bewildering questions and Tapasvi suspects him to be an agent to destroy Indian culture. He discovers that Tapasvi has his remote device but he somehow fails to get it. Later,a terrorist attack takes place at a railway station instantly killing Bhairon SIngh, who had come to visit PK, and several others.
PK,completely shaken by this incident decides to challenge Tapasvi Maharaj to prove him wrong as well as prove Sarfaraz to not have deceived Jaggu, since he had discovered their love for each other.PK turns out to prove the innocence of Sarfaraz and reunites him and Jaggu together and finally gets back his remote device as per the challenge with Tapasvi,if he wins.
PK finally calls back his spacecraft and leaves for his home planet.
The film concludes with PK coming back to research human behavior on Earth with his other Alien friends, among whom Ranbir Kapoor turns out to be one among them.
Direction/Performances:-
The undoubted soul of the movie is none other than Aamir Khan, who managed to get into the skin of the character as a humanoid alien wondering about the uniqueness of human behavior with respect to religion and traditions.Anushka Sharma as Jaggu not only had a new look this time but a new role as a young go getter kind of journalist who is willing to unearth the truth and justice for PK.Sushant Singh Rajput had a small cameo kind of role as Sarfaraz who escapes his love till the end in a bid to avoid communal differences.
Boman Irani as Jaggu's jovial boss was completely deserving in the role and his interaction with PK was quite humorous.
Others such as Parikshit Sahni playing Jaggu's tough/stern Dad trying to preserve their family and cultural heritage was good.Saurabh Shukla as the fake god man trying to maintain his position reminds you of some political mascots who would go to any extent of eliminating people who question their ways or tactics.
Rajkumar Hirani used a very thought provoking method of human customs and traditions in different situations. He tried to show that since we humans are so dipped into these traditions that we practice them on a habitual basis. So much that an Alien has to come and wonder what we do.
Rajkumar and Aamir Khan's association together in both 3 Idiots and PK turned out to be a very lucky mascot in both the times.
Music:-
The music of the movie was composed by Shantanu Moitra,Ankit Tiwari and Ajay Atul.Lyrics were provided by Swanand Kirkire.
Songs such as Chaar Kadam and Tharki Chokro were already popular before the film's release.Love is a waste of time,Nanga Punga dost,Bhagwan hai kahan re tu,were some of the other good songs in the movie. Sonu Nigam,Shaan,Shreya Ghoshal,Ankit Tiwari and Swaroop Khan were the singers who lent their voices.
Overview:-
Despite the film being in controversy over its false or misleading depictions of religion in this country,it still managed to gain instant popularity and turn out to be the highest grossing film of all times. It did not malign or downplay any religious belief, but showed these beliefs from the point of view of an Alien who raised questions through his intelligent perception.
