Putting it shortly, you cannot get the kind of information this website provides even from the most expensive photography manuals in the market! Still better, this website is updated round the clock, and is free.
The website has authentic information on every minute aspect of photography, where the experiences and opinions of thousands of photographers that pour in from all over the world, are pooled, processed, and presented before you in a visually enthralling way. In other words, this is the mouthshut.com of photography.
http://www.photo.net was created by one MITian, Philip Greenspun, in 1993 as a personal website. Today the site attracts almost 1 million unique visitors per month, and its server processes more than 2 million requests everyday. The effort was not without difficulties; financing it was troublesome. Therefore it was decided in the spring of 2000, that the only way to keep https://photo.net alive, and free, was to charge referral fees from retailers. As the referrals are made after thorough vetting, the customers too can be assured of the quality of the products.
While experience can only be conveyed and cannot be taught, this website can teach you the rest! You may be that novice; first time photographer fiddling with the aim & shoot camera you got as a gift on your birthday, or you may be a real professional, looking for the best in cameras, film rolls, processing equipment and repairing locations at the lowest prices, or for best locations for a shoot. This site has something for all!
http://www.photo.net's ''learn'' section is a treat for eyes. Each aspect of basic photography is wonderfully articulated with the help of breath-taking photographs, contributed by the visitors to https://photo.net from all over the world, so much so that you will never ever again need to buy a basic photography guide from a bookstore once you visit this site. It includes comprehensive information on how to take pictures, tips on developing, framing, and presentation, caring for equipment and solving the problems thay may arise during a shoot.
Added to these, are the tips and advice sent in by photography enthusiasts who have gone through each section, and these are produced as foot-notes (I could never dream that so much of advice would be available on a mundane topics such as ''choosing a film roll'').
Are you interested in buying a camera, and wondering which model to buy among the plethora that are available in the market? Do not worry! https://photo.net is there to help you! Visit its ''shop,'' and ''ezshop'' sections which have information on choosing a camera, equipment reviews, comparisions, price-lists, recommended retailers, classified ads and so on. The information is on modern analogue and digital cameras, as well as the old time classics (such as Hasselbald). Before buying, you may even go through the ''common frauds'' subsection to learn from others' mistakes!
Its ''travel'' section has stories, anecdoetes, and experiences shared by travelling photographers from all around the globe, meant for helping out other similar photographers (where else you can get advice on things like ''wilderness survival'' for a photographer?).
You think your photographs are world class, and want to present them for critical reviews and comments of the Gurus of photography? You can do so by uploading them onto the ''gallery'' section. Once you have become a professional photographer, you can even present yourself to the world in the ''portfolio'' section.
If you want to discuss, or take advice upon any specific aspect of photography, or buy and sell second hand equipment, make sure that you visit the ''community'' section. For booklovers, there is a ''book-review'' section exclusive to books on photography. The website also has a section on famous quotes on photography, and I liked this one by Pablo Picasso, ''I have discovered photography. Now I can kill myself. I have nothing else to learn.''
As far as I am concerned, the writings on this website had a formative effect on my photography; it mellowed me down to a more choosy and contemplative photographer, from the indiscrete and shutter-happy one I was!
The website loads fast on my browser, Opera 7.1, never posing any problems, and so it should be with you too. Happy browsing!!!
