Beer and Music... . Review on Pecos, Brigade Road, Bangalore

This review is an apology for an absolutely dreadful piece of writing by me (my first piece) about Pecos. Had to make amends even though the concerned piece got decent ratings.

Anyway, Pecos is just off Brigade Road, on Rest House Road, the second right when going down Brigade …… Brigade Road being the place where most of Bangalore converge to walk up and down. People keep apart whole evenings just so that they can walk up and down Brigade Road.

OK, so once you’re in Pecos, where do you sit? On weekends, you won’t have to make this choice, as you’ll either run to the first free seat that become available or get out and pop into Guzzlers just across the road. On other days I suggest the Top Floor (covered terrace) if you’re on the talkative side or the 1st Floor if you’re the musical type. Speaking of music, Pecos plays the most eclectic mix of rock and jazz and the pub will never be found wanting with regard to music.

Now you’re comfortable seated… what next? Notice the ambience… its cramped, dark and you have Jazz and guitaring greats staring down from the walls. Please feel free to inscribe your name on the brick wall if there’s space left anywhere… its accepted practice. I assume you’ll be hungry or thirsty by now; So, take a deep breath and scream out “Kiraaaaan” and some smiling chap will turn up to take your orders. This chap may or may not be Kiran, depending on whether Kiran holds you in sufficient esteem to serve you himself.

Now comes the difficult part of placing your orders. Alcohol wise, there’s not much of a choice, with Beer being the only intoxicant on the menu. The beer is good and decently chilled and is served fast enough. On subject of beer, don’t forget to take the ‘Pitcher Card’ or the ‘Mug Card’ if you intend to frequent this place. To put it simply in ‘Standard Alcoholic Dialect’, 5 times mug = Pitcher, 10 times mug marked on ‘mug card’ = 1 mug free and 10 times pitcher marked on ‘pitcher card’ = 1 pitcher free. And let me assure you that it’s a worthwhile endeavor to collect 3 or 4 ‘Pitcher Cards’ with 10 pitchers marked on it and redeem all of them and get sloshed for free when you’re short of cash.

What do you eat with the beer? The simple rule to food in Pecos is that Pecos serves everything from squid to peanuts and a whole range of food in between. The food is possibly the best part… it’s cheap and you can do dinner after having your fill of beer. I suggest the Pecos English / Indian Breakfast if you’re there early enough on weekends and the Chicken Curry and Dosa on other days. There enough good beef dishes like Kerala Beef Fry and Beef Tacos to try out and some exotic stuff like crab.

Getting down to the reviewing, the question is not whether I like Pecos, but whether Pecos likes me. You have to be of a certain temperament and outlook to like Pecos and you have to give the Pecos atmosphere the time to grow on you. So, it’s absolutely your fault if you don’t like this place. Heres hoping that you’re cool enough to hang out at Pecos.
