Classic stuff. Review on Parineeta

Vidhu Vinod Chopra is another director who has been focussing on creative production of late. After hugely successful Munnabhai MBBS, he decides to experiment with a novel by the author of Devdas.

The story, transplanted from 1913 to 1962, is set in 'Calcutta' naturally. The initial portion is strikingly similar to that of Devdas. The lovers separate due to misunderstandings and a scheming father. Of course, you get to see what happens to them in the end; but that is only after a few shocking twists.

Though the good looking people and eye-treating settings smack of commercialism, it isn't garish like Bhansali's Devdas. The focus on story is maintained always. Even the coverage of Bengali culture doesn't become distracting. In spite of songs being fused with the narration superbly, the pace does seem a bit slow. But then, is that a reflection of the times? A couple of songs could have been chopped off though. It's painful to see 'ads' crop up even in a period movie.

The story starts off in flashback mode from a critical juncture. However, the transition is abrupt and might leave the audience confused, atleast for a while. The advantage of having a literary base is clear in the smooth flow of the screenplay. The movie closes on a dramatic note though.

Saif, in a never-before-role, gives a controlled performance, even though that includes a couple of high-voltage scenes. The remarkable aspect is the complete absence of his trademark speaking style. Debutante Vidya however comes up trumps. Natural acting and expressive eyes let her become one with the character. Unfortunately, Dutt doesn't join the party. Despite putting in effort, he doesn't really fit in. Mirza is good in her small role. Chakraborty is menacing. Rekha in an item number is a damp squib. The rest of the cast is apt nevertheless.

Songs are refreshingly melodious; Moitra is yet another find. Costumes and art direction are brilliant, with a lot of attention to detail. Make-up is kept to a minimum; however, that plays spoil-sport for Dutt again, making him look a bit too old at times. Cinematography succeeds in giving a pleasant look-and-feel to the movie.

Sarkar doesn't seem to be in full flow, possibly due to the looming presence of Chopra. However, this movie is overall definitely better than Chopra's directorial ventures of recent times.
