About story: ''Paheli'' is a story of feminine solitude.
''Paheli'' leaves you with many thoughts. Plus a smile.
Amol Palekar makes the movie worth seeing....his way of making a triangle with only one hero and one heroine....great effort.
Palekar might have feared of falling. In doing the folk tale with lots of songs and dances, and it doesn't look like a 'formula' film. He goes beyond and deeper into our folk traditions. His efforts are really brilliant.
The plot is frisky and risky folk-flips. Director worked it out and came off as a winner. The taste of folk tale never went away and the turn around in the ghost story...that blends well.
''Paheli'' is well plotted and lyrical. Usage of light, colour and sound live an extra-ordinary feeling when you come out of theatre.
A very simple story but told in a long-forgotten flourish of folk-way.
Artwork and specially camera work furnish the film's framework with a unique blend of nostalgia(when its a village story) and modernity.
Its story of a lonely and neglected wife in a business family that is located in a time long gone-by.
Now about Rani Mukherjee: She played Lachchi that can be remembered for a long time...The screenplay is such that Lachchi's becomes hero of movie. When the ghost gently confesses to Lachchi that she can choose between asking him to stay or leave, Lachchi breaks down.
''No one has ever asked me what I want.'' It's a heart-stopping moment. Quite emotional and looks genuine...
SRK: As the dull husband and the playful passionate ghost, Shah Rukh Khan is a revelation. Though at times 'Shah Rukh Khan' overacts. He remains coolely in character. 2 roles played by him......really good
Normally we see SRK playing Rahul...a lover boy....This movie is different
Absolute scene-stealer: Great BigB, who as the eccentric shepherd who solves the riddle of the double husband comes on screen in the last reel, bringing with his persona the velocity and humour of an actor who has seen it all, and can yet surprise you.
Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah's voices for the two puppets serving as the narrators are a masterstroke.
Overall: Songs and dance are good. Story is well knitted. Characters are well woven into the story plot. except the comedy sequence....
Juhi: Rani's Lachchi is matched by Juhi Chawla as her sister-in-law. She could have been given a longer role.....
Fantasy but entertaining as well as close to life......Good job.
