Darn my enthusiasm for FDFS……it has bombed so many a times but yet I am never discouraged. Paathshala just adds on to the list of such disastrous attempts. For preliminaries I must congratulate the promotional and PR agency for the movie which really did a job of great packaging; because that’s about it. Paathshala is just great packaging and good promotion, but absolutely hollow from insides.
As an intention, it was admirable to raise an issue over the educational structure of the society, but then Taare Zameen Par happened long ago. And trying to raise an issue of similar manner or league requires more than good intentions. Foremostly it requires a plot or a script( read plausible), which is absolutely missing in Paathshala. At a point you feel that every scene is a result of a “bulb which suddenly blinked”.
The structure of the haphazard story is based on a school SVM (Sarswati Vidya Mandir), situated in suburbs of Mumbai. The school is following the traditional guidelines and fails to compete in comparison to the modern schools. The row of events is like this : Principal Aditya Sahay (Nana Patekar )'s tension, discussion, enters savior appearing oh-so-known dimpled guy Rahul Prakash Udyawar (Shahid Kapoor). Rest what prevails is an utter confusion, you actually get caught in a web of babes(Ayesha Takia), bimbettes ( Sushmita Mukerjee and etcs.) and some other handful who insert a dialogue here and there. You do get enlightened on facts like “chips aur coke se bachchon ki health kharaab hoti hai”, or that female teachers’ dressing sense and makeup can pass on for occupants of red light areas.
Too many points but sadly the movie is only one; so they just try to cram all issues together like, teenage student having crush on male teacher, guy with a birth mark spoiling his face getting no attention from pals, peer pressure, rivalry and phew!!
Songs and music is hummable and “Aye Khuda” being one of them, rest Paathshala itself needs an institution to teach the basics so required for a movie!!
