Story:

Hello readers, this is going to be my 3rd review. And it’s all about my 1st well known branded dictionary, named Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 8th Edition(with CD).

As it is a well-known name, and in India most of the advance students use it so I wanted to buy it. But before buying it, I wanted to read reviews of it on Mouthshut.com. But I was totally surprised to see that there was none. So I had made up my mind that I will buy it and will make you guys aware about it. So here goes its 1st review on Mouthshut.

I bought it for Rs.560 from Patel Chest(near Delhi University) around 1 month ago(MRP is 625 and there was 10% discount). I was exploring it till now so that I could present my unbiased opinion about it.

DICTIONARY

Its outside cover is good and it was wrapped with a thin transparent polythin. At that point of time, I wasn’t able to spot that a CD was in it. But then the shopkeeper showed it sticked with a hard polythin on the back cover.

Looks: Its outside cover is really good. And yeah, you will expect such a decent external cover while buying such a branded dictionary. Pages are very smooth but thin(the pages should be thin otherwise its weight will become too much to carry as there are around 1000 pages).

Content: Apart from word-meanings (British English words, American English words, Australian English, Indian English, etc.), you will find Oxford Writing Tutor at the end which comprises “The Writing Process”, “Answering the question”, “Writing a Comparison Essay”, “Writing a longer essay or dissertation”, “Writing an argument essay”, “Oral Presentation”, “Writing a Summary”, “Reporting on Data”, “Writing a Report”, “Discussing pictures and cartoons”, “Writing a formal letter”, “Writing emails”, “Writing a CV/Resume”; with examples. This is really going to help a person in day-to-day life.

You’ll also find parts of body name, animal kingdom, fruits and vegetables, tress plants and flowers, herbs spices nuts and cereals; with pictures at the end. This will help new English readers to connect with surrounding things.

CD

It is copyright protected CD. So don’t expect that you can copy your friend’s CD. It is having all words same as in the dictionary. Apart from it, you will find iWriter, which is good for writing skills. There are Activities also containing synonym antonym, jumble words etc. to improve your overall English.

There is My Topics also, which contain words from different fields like science, sports, education, business, etc. to help your field related English speaking. To get a glimpse of it, I’m attaching a screenshot of home screen of this software.

Negative

The only negative thing I have found is that you might not be able to find some Indian words(Actually after watching the movie Queen, I searched the Spices to find a word for ‘Heeng’. But I couldn’t.)

Verdict

It’s value for money. You will find it very useful for your forthcoming career.
