I just got hold of the new album 'Oru Kalluriyin Kadhai' by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The film is being directed by Nantha Periyasamy, a debutant director. Na.Muthukumar has lent his hands for https://lyrics. YSR and NM combination has done wonders in Kadhal kondein and 7GRC. After listening to this album couple of times, I would say that this combination is going to rock the TFM for sometime for sure. The story of this movie is a college-based one and more like memories of a few characters. This album is packed with fast-paced melodies and rhythm songs that are essential for this kind of flick.
It has 8 tracks, 3 ryhthm-based and 3 melodies with 2 repeats.
1. Kangal Kalangida - Karthik - 5/5 Yuvan has tried this kind of fast paced melody earlier (like 'nee en' in Dass) but did not get it right before. But this time he has come out with a winner. After Karthik got his runaway hit in 7GRC (kan pesum varthaigal), he has sung this solo number. The song starts with typical Yuvan style techo beats with piano backup and picks up with catchy beats alongwith vocal part. Look out for the bass-line when Karthik goes 'ondraai', it is just fantastic. The piano has been used throughout the song. The song is about friendship and reunion and, Na.Muthukumar has come up with good lyrics especially
marathillirunthu vuthirntha pookal meendum kiLaikku sendridume
kadantha kaalaththai thiruppi thanthu kadavaulai natpu vendriduthe
2. Kadhal Yenbathu - Harishragavenddra & Chinmaye - 5/5 This song is a nice, slow duet song. Harish is a very lucky guy to get only good songs from Yuvan all the time. This is easily one of his best songs. Yuvan has got his singer selection right again, Harish and Chinmaye are apt for this smooth flowing duet song. I like Chinmaye's voice especially when it turns husky at the end, simply great. Now the down side of this song is that the opening orchestration has shades of thaththi thaththi thaavuthe (from KK background score) and in charanams 10 secs of vayathu vaa vaa (from Thulluvatho ilamai) tune coming. He could have avoided them. But even after considering these facts, this song can be enjoyed over and over again.
3. Geetha Mala - Devan, Ranjith, Sundarrajan & Chorus - 4/5 This song is a typical college song, starts with folk beats and turns to synth beats when pallavi starts. Folk beats coming again in the interlude and for a brief moment tabla comes. 'sunday kooda wordking day aachu' part is catchy. Devan sings the first part, Ranjith does the second part and overall an enjoyable song.
4. Vunakku Yendru Oruthi - Unnimenon & Chorus - 5/5 I always like his short songs that come part of his background scores. This song is not an exception either, another short and sweet song. When a guy eyes on his girl for the first time, how he will feel is this song. The song has electronica kind of sounds accompanied with good beats and runs for only 1.05 mins.
5. Kangal Kandadhu - Ranjith, Ganga - 5/5 This is a repeat of song no.1 with different lyrics and a pathos number. It is about the hero and the heroine departing and moving on with their lives. This song starts with a string of violins and filled with chorus in the first and second interludes. Though this is a pathos number, it has catchy beats that gell very well with the tune. Each and every line is good. While the male part expresses his sorrow, the female part gives the reality factor and asks to move on.
M: ''kanavugal adukki kattiya kottai katrum vessiye kalaigirathe''
F: ''kanavugal adukki kattiya kottai katrum mothida kalaiyathe''
6. Dhalappa Kattuda - Sriram & Chorus - 4/5 Another fast-paced dance number. If you have not noticed before, Yuvan's some of dappagunthu songs have this unique style. He tries to drive parts of songs just with miminal instruments and relies heavily on vocal part. He will have heavy orchestration in the beginning and at later stage. This song is set to similar style. The song starts with heavy beats and goes to minimal and gets back to heavy at the end again. The minimal orchestration is very good. Sriram's voice is apt, and a fun song to listen.
7. Pangu Podu - KK & Ranjith - 3/5One more college style dappagunththu song. This time with heavy beats throughout the song. This song has heavy shades of ''sight adippom'' from April Mathatthil. College going crowd will enjoy this song. Ok song.
8. Kangal Kandadhu - KK, Sujatha - 5/5This is a repeat of song no.5 with different singers. The lead singer KK is a good choice but Sujatha's voice does not blend with his part. She sounds too old to me atleast in the beginning of her part.
Verdict: Another blockbuster album from Yuvan. It has all required ingredients to become 'Da album' for college students this year. It is really amazing how this guy at such a young age (23) coming out with hit after hit. Na. Muthukumar has done excellent job again, just listen to his lines in, Kangal kalangida and Kaathal kandathu, same tune with different https://lyrics. I hope the director will do justice to these songs on screen. If peppy and fast-paced songs are your favorites, grab this album. You will like it.
