Excuse me for not being so tech savvy friends. All I want to do today is to narrate my experiences with this cute little toy from Nokia. I had recently been transferred to Hyderabad and in the melee of the packers taking over our house and rushing for this job and that work, I somehow misplaced my cell phone somewhere. We were hoping it might have got packed with all the rest of the luggage, but even after unpacking at Hyderabad we never could find it again.
We were thus faced with the mammoth task of selecting a new mobile handset. Both me and my wife are never the ones to spend too much money on gizmos and neither are we so high-tech as to understand fully the features that are there in the handsets these days. And neither am I going to go around downloading games and ringtones ! But I somehow heard from a friend of mine that a navigation and GPS feature in one of the Nokia mobiles is a real help.
Being in a new city and already being a Nokia fan I decided that I’ll buy a handset with this feature only. Just before proceeding further I must mention here that the reason I always stick to Nokia is that their radiation emission levels are just a fraction of what other manufacturers declare. Even though it has not been established fully yet weather the cell phone radiations cause tumors or not, but I just never want to take a chance.
Even though we bought this set we were not sure of what its functionality would be and if it would really work in real life situations. So we set out to explore it one day. We were in a mall in Banjara hills and decided to go to Jubilee Hills, another popular destination here in Hyderabad. We were amazed at how easily we could feed the destination in the GPS system. In no time we heard a voice “ Your destination has been Calculated” and a map appeared on the screen showing the exact road that we were on and the direction that we were moving in. The map would keep moving along with the movement of the car and showed a green line on the road along with an arrow showing the direction we were to take. On the top left hand corner of the screen was a direction arrow showing the general direction of our mapped destination. If we had to take a turn at the next crossing the same would come in advance on our screen. We were amazed to see that even the smallest cuts in the road or places where we could take a U turn were mapped in such detail. Navigation has never been easier ! In less than ten minutes we reached our destination, and were greeted by the voice from the phone “ You have reached your destination”.
Then another day we did not know about the location of a nearby Hyundai dealer. We simply fed this information in the phone and it showed us in order of the distance all the nearest Hyundai dealers, and even took us right in front of the showroom, before announcing “You have reached your destination”.
The data about all places of eating, banks, car dealers, tourist spots, restaurants, ATMs, Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Medicine Shops, Hotels, Malls, offices, is vailable in the database of the phone. In a nutshell you will never need to ask directions for or the address of any place in a new city.
In addition to this the navigator also has features where you can search by the travel mode too. Meaning that if you are on foot, it will take you from the nearest and shortest footpath available. At the time of mapping the destination it also tells you in miles the distance to your destination. The data of all the major cities is available in the phone.
And you know whats the best part about this phone. All connectivity with the satellite is free for a lifetime, unlike several other phone models where you have to pay hefty quarterly charges for keeping this feature activated. Further no GPRS connection is required for using GPS this feature, though it can also be used in the GPRS mode where it is somewhat faster.
However do note that using GPS does consume the battery and if you are travelling long distance do carry a car charger with you.
The phone of cource has other usual features of 2MP camera, several ringtones, music palyer etc.
So happy navigating and as they say at NOKIA “Lets Never Get Lost”
