NOKIA POLITICS IN ACTION.THEY HAVE GATHERED ENOUGH PROFIT FROM THIS SET BECOZ OF PPL LIKE ME and now THEY CAN MANAGE TO SELL THE REST AT CLEARENCE SALE RATES !) I WILL RECOMMEND THIS PHONE IF YOU GET IT FIRST HAND FOR 13K OR LESS. BUT ABOVE THAT I WONT. SECOND HAND (MAX. 6 MONTHS OLD) AT 8 IS ALSO AN OPTION. BUT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A VERY GOOD FEATURE PACKED PHONE, THIS PHONE IS REALLY OUTDATED NOW. I WUD RECOMMEND THE NOKIA 7710 :::COSTS AROUND 26K. ORIGINAL REVIEW FOLLOWS ::
Mesmerized....Yes!! Mesmerized by the phone....
Be it the looks or the display or the camera no other phone in the market can equal it, let alone surpass.
Its powerful, featureful, ''SPELLFUL''
LETS GO THROUGH THE FEATURES FIRST :
GSM 900/1800/1900 - TRIBAND
This means that this phone will work everywhere in the world (where there is GSM mobile service!!)
Bluetooth and Infrared Connectivity
With this, you can connect your phone to another compatible phone or a computer (to share files) Bluetooth is more advanced than Infrared. It uses radiowaves (shortlength - 10metres, 2.4Ghz).And also it does not need a Line of Sight barrier, which is the drawback of InfraRed. Bluetooth is fast too. You can forward ringtones and videos and other files through bluetooth and infrared. But some files, especially those download through GPRS cannot be forwarded. You need a special software to be able to do that. Its known as SeleQ. The Nokia 3650 version of the software can work on the old firmware (v 3.41) of the 6600. But for the new 4.12 version you need the Seleq for 6600.The phone can also be used like a modem i.e. provide internet connection to a computer. Bluetooth can aslo be used for connecting a wireless handsfree.
Bluetooth is a battery hog, so use it as carefully as possible.
Series 60 Symbian OS 7.0S
The phone has got the Symbian OS 7. The OS was a little buggy at very 7, but this one is far better. Its ''S'' version. But that means that many of your favourite games on the Nokia 3650 or 7650 may not work. (Refer to Ease of Use below to know what OS means for phones.)
THE PROCESSOR IS SLOW. ACCEPTABLE PERFORMANCE WHEN YOU DONT HAVE A LOT IN THE MEMORY.BUT AS YOU START FILLING THE MEMORY, THE PERFORMANCE DROPS
CAMERA
The phone has a good camera. It has got 2x zoom. This means you can magnify an image twice of its size - 200% of actual size.Pictures were great!!
The video recording can be done in 2modes:
176X144 (Large)
128X96 (small)
But there is a time limit of 10seconds which you can never change. The length varies though. If there is a lot of light and you have audio recording stopped, it can record 16 seconds or so. You can opt to capture audio also. And sometimes, it may even drop to 8 seconds. However, you can get other softwares which can record unlimited (limited by the disk space you have), but usually the problem with those is that there quality is very very poor!! The criminal is the low RAM which is not good enough for long recordings.
Memory
Memory is indeed the most essential part in these SmartPhones. Since these phones can handle a lot of application, they should get enough memory to carry out operations. The phone has got 6MB memory. You get an MMC stick with the phone which has got additional 32MB. You can always buy memory later.
MMC COSTS AROUND A 1000 FOR 128MB. Dont format the MMC from Nokia...It has got a great goodie....Opera browser.
Opera Browser
This is the best part of the phone. You can surf any site with this browser. The ''Services'' browser cant deal with pages with frames. So, a message is displayed ''This page has got frames and your browser does'nt support this''.
With Opera, things are really good...It displays all!!
Ease of Use
The phone is easy to use. It takes time to learn all the features of the phone, but still its fairly easy to use. There are two buttons below the screen. Mostly, the functions written above the button are executed by that button.
Many a times, the click on left button pops up a menu. You use the stick to navigate into the function you want to accomplish and click. The stick is 5 way i.e. it can accept a press. There are two other buttons not found in most of the other phones. One looks like a pen and the other is ''C''. The pen is used for text editing functions such as switching on the dictionary and COPY and PASTE and also multiple selection of files. The C is for deleting text or files and also canceling things at times. Check comments for a “How-to copy paste in 6600”
For anyone upgrading from a 3310, 3315 or any small display phone, the interface would be easy to adapt to.
Additionals ::
RealOne Player :: This software lets you play streaming videos through GPRS (provided that your Service Provider provides it). I have a HUTCH connection and it gives good quality trailers (but not streaming!!).
GPRS :: General Packet Radio Service. This service enables you to connect to the internet using your phone. Its available only on select Providers. You can access WAP enabled websites with this service. The 6600 however also supports viewing of websites which are written on HTML. But it wont show websites having frames. But you can get softwares for your phone (such as Opera for Nokia) which will fill this drop too!! And, Opera comes free with Nokia 6600
HSCSD :: asdf
Some of the other NICE THINGS ABOUT IT (May require a bit advanced skills)
1. CONTACTS with Photos. You can browse through the contacts and as soon as u wait selecting a contact, his or her photo can appear on the top left portion of the screen. You have to store the photo for that purpose.
To do that:: Shoot a pick of the person whose photo you want with the camera in the ''Portrait'' Mode. (You can use photos that you have taken normally, but the Portrait mode is the best fit for the screen for this purpose). Then Go to contacts, select the contact, click on options and then select edit. Then again click Options and select ''Add thumbnail''. Then select the photo you have shot.
2. TrueTones :: You can download ringtones with voice in it and set it as ringtones. I use my computer and cut and use parts of songs as ringtones. Then send it to the phone using bluetooth or MMC card reader. these files are WAV or AMR clips. Be sure to convert the WAV file to a monophonic,16000hz 8-bit sample before sending it to the phone. Normal WAVs in computers are too big for the phone's capacities. They will play, but make the phone slow.
3. Caller Specific Ringtones :: You can have different ringtones for different callers
Looks
To me, looks do matter !! The phone looks pretty harmless when the backlight is off, but when the latter is on, you will start crying - ''Why was I late in buying this phone !!'' Considering the inner looks (the user interface), there is a new feature added...''Themes''.Much like ''Desktop Themes'' in Windows. But there are great themes in there and downloadable. Themes change the total display.
This phone is a nice buy. The prices are expected to fall in a few days.
NOW THAT I HAVE GIVEN YOU ALL I COULD, I PROMISE THAT I WILL UPDATE IT AS FREQUENTLY AS POSSIBLE. Check out the comments sections for that and...
DO REMEMBER TO RATE AND LEAVE A COMMENT.....
