Finally I return to MS after a seriously long gap. I know most of new MSians might not know me but the old ones if they are still here then they would still remember thegreatone eh!
Anyway coming straight to the rvu as the title says its about the new Nokia 6600. First of all I will say something about my old Nokia 3120. I used it for nearly for an year no problems encountered but then I was tired of the cell and this time I wanted a cell fone which had some advanced features too.
So what made me go for Nokia 6600?
Did the new ad “na badle mere papa” or Rahul Vaidya’s new video with a cute gal made me go for it? To tell u the fact, Tenny aka Diver knows it. I was hell bent upon buying the SE K700i and I even told the shopkeeper to directly give me the fone even without looking at the other models but then he told me some facts (which I will state later when I compare Nokia 6600 with SE K700i) and since my budget was around 10ks I settled for New Nokia 6600.
The Phone:
The fone is large its dimensions are 108.66 mm x 58.2mm x 23.7mm and weighs roughly around 125 gms. Yes u can feel the weight in the pocket and if you are wearing tight jeans then it would be difficult to get the fone in and out from the pocket.
The Positives: (No Technicalities)
-- The most common phone and the best seller. Well if its common then why buy it. Simple reason. Its common means its good that’s why people use it. And the name Nokia 6600 makes a difference. U get it and u will come to know what I am talking about.
-- Now comes in a sexy two tone Black colour. Keypad and removable back cover in shiny black while rest is dark black.
--Symbian 7.0 OS, Series 60 platform version 2.0 user interface. Pretty easy to use interface allowing grid view as well as list view.
-- 64 MB Memory Card (and still expandable) in built 6MB fone memory.
-- Bluetooth, Infrared, GPRS and HSCSD-No problems faced in connectivity as yet. Have used Bluetooth with ease and did Infrared data transfer with Sony Ericsson fones K500i and J200i without problems. Also can be synchronized with PC using Bluetooth or Infrared. Data can also be transferred from PC to Cell and vice versa with the above technologies.
-- Longer Battery life (Slim battery BL-5C). Trust me it runs long.
--Camera (with Night mode) and Video Recorder (records for about 10 sec. with audio). Comes in with 2x zoom. Camera quality is excellent and night mode rocks.
-- 65K TFT lively display which looks awesome especially on the 2.1” large screen.
-- 5 way joystick.
--U can also use Copy Paste feature in messaging.
--Ability to play mp3 files, Audio and Video streaming (playable in the real player which comes in by default). Polyphonic ringtones. We can also set songs which can be of 20-25 sec wav files and ringtones better known as True Tones.
--Voice Command and Mobile wallet for security.
--Improved HTML browser. Opera also available for browsing.
--Can view and control Word files, Excel Spreadsheets and PowerPoint presentations (Quick Office).
--Host of utilizes come with the fone like Nokia Wireless Presenter, Kodak Print, HP print and also some photo and video editing softwares and can still download more.
--Finally If you want to sell of this model, you will get good resale value.
Note: I am not going into the details since I am writing this rvu taking into consideration that people will be looking for details about the general features that the fone offers and not the technicalities.
The Negatives:
--In the age where the cell fones are becoming smaller this one is large and weighs more.
--No Message Counter (how do I miss the message counter in my 3120 since I mostly use the fone for messaging).
--The Camera at the back is without shutter or cover so is more viable to dust and scratches.
--The keypad is small and might seem clumsy for the time being for new users.
--Sound quality is poor because it has mono output. Also mp3 files are low at maximum volume so better off listening to them with headphones on.
--No FM radio.
--Joystick is slightly rigid although once you get habituated it wont be a problem.
--Except for Bluetooth and IR no facility to transfer data using data cable. I have an age old pc which doesn’t even have a USB port so for me to transfer data from pc to cell I have to find out alternative ways.
Some tips:
--By default the fone doesn’t play mp3 files you have to get software like Ultra mp3 to play mp3 files.
--Similarly to get unlimited video recording you will have to install software like Camcorder.
--Most of us who transition from budget fone to a smart fone like this have the habit to close an application by pressin the red key. But here doing so will minimize the application. And you will go on minimizing applications until you realize that the fone has become slow. So u will have to use the back option to get out of an application. By the way you can check out which applications are open by clickin and holding the menu key and can select any of minimized applications by the joystick.
--Its better to store messages in Memory card rather than fone’s default memory (6MB).
New Nokia 6600 v/s SE K700i
Lets see who scores where of the two in some of the features:
--Screen and Resolution wise 6600 scores because of the large screen.
--Looks wise I go for K700i. Sleek and Sexy.
--Weight and Dimension also K700i easily scores over 6600.
--FM radio comes in K700i while it is missed in 6600 (I miss it badly in 6600).
--Sound Quality. Well no one can beat K700i in terms of Sound Quality. K700i comes in with 40 channel polyphony while 6600 comes in 20 channel polyphony. Moreover mp3 clarity in K700i is far better than 6600 which has a mono output. Take a note though K700i will not be able to play .amr files.
--Ease of use. 6600 scores here. Although the wizard of K700i is pretty cool.
--OS Stabilty. 6600 wins here. Some applications won’t open in K700i.
--Camera. Well I guess here I will give a slight edge to 6600 simply because the pic quality is slightly better than K700i. By the way K700i comes with a flash light (can be used as torch) which is substituted by night mode in 6600.
And the three major points which made me go for Nokia 6600:
--Battery Life is far better in 6600. Since both the fones come with Bluetooth and IR data transfer sucks lot of battery so I would rather prefer a cell which lasts longer with less charging.
--No memory expansion slot for K700i. U have a good mp3 player but if u cant listen to more than 4 songs then whats the use of the player. Of course the radio substitutes for the player but then u have only limited memory.
--A wide range of applications and accessories are available for 6600 than K700i.
Final Verdict:
For all those who want a fone around 10ks or slightly less than that and are pretty much comfortable with using a large fone and don’t mind having a common fone I reco. 6600 and for all those are concerned with looks and sound clarity but can compromise for the memory card expansion and battery K700i can go for.
