I bought a Nokia 3120 Classic and it has been 8 months since I purchased it. I do not know why this phone is seen only very scarce. Everyone who has seen this mobile has praised its look and sleekness. I have had a 1100, 3120, 3120 classic and now 3120 classic.
There are three color variants as advertised on web (Dark Grey, Maroon, Purple). However I was not able to see any of these in any showrooms. Most pathetic all showrooms had only a "White" model !! I really do not know how a white color would suit a mobile phone (personal opinions vary, even I like white color, but certainly not on my mobile phones - To me it is as odd as wearing a light green pant !?!!?)
(Official names of these colors are Graphite, Plum/Powder White, Deep Red, Chestnut Brown)
I had to wait for two days to get a dark grey variant (Graphite).I had researched extensively before making a choice. My criterion were as follows.
1. It should NOT be a smart phone (To me a phone is primarily for speaking and I want it notto have capabilities of installing software stuff, then you need to fear for virus, and phone would slow down some day - if dumped with software, games etc, however I would expect memory storage capabilities)
- this phone is S40 V3 (the highest version in S40 series), you can still have have lots of games other applications - these can never become evasive in S40 series.
For your info: Next series is S60 - allows SW to be installed
2. Memory storage/ USB connectivity
I would really expect LOTS here. This phone supports upto 8GB.
I got a Genuine Nokia 1 GB card free with this set. However I have planned to upgrade to 4 GB (I did not need more space yet)
When I say I do not want a phone to have software installed, I expect storage space because I will use it as a storage device.
(I have access to PC at home and office. I am not a busy business man to work on my files in-between when I am not at home of office :P )
USB supports V 2.0
- 8GB is toooo much for me; expectations met
- USB cable is different than traditional Nokia phones so you can't swap it with your friends anytime.
(for your info: use only approx half the maximum supported memory, if your mobile suppotrs 8GB, go only until 4GB - your phone wont hang if you dont fill the total memory - this is the same reason why we do defragmentations on PCs)
3. GPRS/ MMS/ E-Mail facilities
This phone has all the above, In addition this has a UMTS also. This is a beginer 3G phone, If you have this facility activated from your mobile service provider (currently BSNL has this facility) you can make video calls - There is a small camera on the front for this.
-My requisites met + 3G capability is an add on (supports upto 384 kbps browsing speed)!
4. Camera
The camera clicks really high quality images (it takes a long time to save though). The camera is a 2MP camera. Quality is highest in bright light, deteriorates with dim light. There is a LED flash, but this is not really effective in functioning. it has a 8X digital zoom (only optical zoom is a real zoom, digital zoom is only a gimmick, a mobile phone cant bear lenses to have a optical zoom ever...)
-My expectations met (I wont say WOW but a Okay!)Basically I love taking photos of landscapes, sky, scenery etc, it is good enough for my hobby. Resolution is quite high. (MAX 1600x1200 pixels)
5. FM/ Radio/ Media
You have a cool player and an additional skin (i dont really bother about skins though). FM can scan and store upto 20 stations.
- My city has only 11 FM stations, so I would say Cooool... MP3 player is a basic one and it suffices my need. It even plays movies
CONS: only 3GP movies can be played, You dont have pause and play options or other controls like forward/ rewind in video player. I dont see movies on mobile, so okay for me - but this might be a concern for many.
*6. Inbuilt Memory/ Applications/ Games/ Themes
*Inbuilt memory is actually ~28 MB (but as per specifications it is given as 24 MB). Comes with 4 brilliant themes, Games are not very impressive though. However, I have downloaded lots of themes from Zedge.com. They work perfectly fine on this phone.
Some typical applications like world time, widgets are bundles along with this . There is a Sudoku that I really like, not much impressed about others. However, I have downloaded games/ applications over net.
7. Battery Life:
Excellent, but...
CONS - this is not the traditional battery (as used by many nokia phones including 1100), so you cant swap battery with your friends when you run completely out of battery. (which I do sometimes)
However, with this BIG battery you wont run out of battery (unless you dont charge for a loooong time!)
8. Other Features
The standby on the screen supports upto 4 placeholders. I have stacked them up with shortcuts, Music/ FM, General indicator and Notes. This gives the look and feel of a smart phone. you can set your shortcuts here to overcome the non-availability of dedicated keys for camera, music/FM or whatever you want.
I also liked the voice clarity function. Really good.
There is also a voice command recognition that can switch profiles, call some numbers, and hear battery levels.
9.General Features
2000 contacts; 20 recieved; 20 dialles; 20 received calls, More storaage for SMS/ MMS, Folder options in Inbox, E-Mail, GPRS, 3G, USB,
PROS
Beginer 3G, Video calls, speeds upto 384 kbps, looks, light weight, sleek, Standby mode option, voice recognition commands, 2000 contacts memory, battery life, talk time, voice clarity function, not a smart phone (to me this is a pros!), 8GB expandable memory
CONS
-Non availability of dedicated buttons for camera, music/ fm
-Camera takes a long time for saving, LED flash not so effective in dim lights
-Battery and USB cable are different from normal Nokia phones, so can not be swapped with your friends
-The back cover has to be literally peeled off (give a feel you are hurting the phone) each time you change sim or memory card
Overall a very good 3G phone for this price tag !
