Your honor, I am Advocate Paul the Parrot representing the prime accused, Manish in the famous Jessica Murder scandal. I was attracted by this case from the brilliant advertisement by the 'Marching Ants'. Before going for the movie I was horrified to imagine that a person is been killed for refusing a drink. However, after watching the movie, I decide myself to be the advocate of the accused.
Your honor, I am not sure what was the purpose of making the movie. Is it to make money out of the scandal or to arm people to fight injustice? I doubt how far it is a right strategy to open court cases to public arguments and reopen it with the bullet of media. We have witnessed the death of democracy in many nations where the elected governments were forced out before sworn in ceremony. In the name of injustice the very foundation of democracy was removed. This is no jewel for democracy and it is a pity that it is the advocates of democracy masterminding such sabotages. In the movie, they have mentioned that Delhi is ruled by Power. Then the question is who is more powerful. The film shows that it is not politicians but media.
While going for the film, my expectation was to get into the feel the family must have suffered at the time of the unfortunate incident. The movie failed to leave any such impact which tells the kind of screen play it possessed. It even doesn't work the way a documentary would have worked. I know I am little harsh over here, but with the resources it could have been much better made. I have to admit your honor that I got pretty bored in its entire first half, except the beginning 15 minutes. The second half was loud with a little bow bow and interesting in part. The 'Kuthi' calling, middle finger protest, the candle show etc. are such rare moments. An aspiring model and now a bartender Jessica was 'said to be shot dead' by my client, Manish as he was denied a drink and the first court rejected the case as the 300 odd witnesses where hostile. A war journalist took up the case and won it. There had no suspense factor in the movie and only a good screen play could have saved the show, but it didn't happen.
Let me directly list the case I have in favour of my client, Manish, the son of a minister. In the film they states 300 times that there had 300 plus witnesses in the case. My question is your honor, how can there be 300 witnesses when there were only 3 or 4 in the movie presented by the prosecutor himself. Even otherwise how we can assume 300 people witnessing a murder when dim lights, music and dance on work? This too is when the police investigating officer and the prosecutor are unbiased.
Secondly, at what time the crime took place? Is it took place at 12 midnight or 2 am? While most of the witnesses refuse to admit that they were there after 12, the mobile of sound sleeping Sabrina, the careful sister of Jessica getting annoyed to receive a call a 2 am to the affect of the sad incident. Here there is a difference of 2 hours and the prosecution doesn't clearly justify the delay of 2 hours. This arise ambiguity of the case in favor of my client.
Thirdly your honor, in the movie, the prosecution has shown that my client took the help of a street motorist and later hides the gun under soil. The fun is that your honor, the motorist waited all the time to get this done. If a person killed a person for a drink it can only be done by revenge or under the influence of alcohol. There is no accusation of revenge and a person under the influence of alcohol cannot dig the soil like the way in the film. Also, for the son of a minister and a mobile in hand help must be a calls away, especially where his friends too are awake and out.
Your honor, look at my client's face. Don't you see him so innocent in the film? The director didn't justify selection of Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub. Once selected only with hard hitting incidents the image could have been changed to create a villain who roam with gun but there were no such attempts. I have to admit however that, Myra, the girl played the role of Jessica was good in her performance. For Vidya, the actress shown talent in the first half where her character was let down by the writers in the second half. Rani Mukherji, the talented actress required a better role your honor. Despite being okayed to act as a Bi*ch or Kuthi who smoke vulgar, drive carelessly, asks her boyfriend to play solo, and even head to floor exercise in office Rani is capable of doing much better roles than becoming a loud speaker for abusive words. Even when rest of the cast did their roles well, you can see my client's innocent face which reflects best of character and character does matter!
The video is a poor show of cinematography your honor. Even amateur videos are made better now a days. Close close-ups and odd angles don't help the cause. Editing is the worst. Don't you felt bad editing throughout? The music of the film is very impressive but how important is music in a court drama your honor?
Before winding up my case let me also raise an injustice exist in the present Indian society which is capable of many murders. Delayed justice is denied justice. What about denied justice from the first place? In our country everybody has to wait. We have to wait for cooking gas, Telephone & Electricity Connection. Ours is the only country where we have to wait for getting a car of our choice even after paying the double of international market even at the time of recession. Even in the court they have to wait for many years. The frustration can take many a toll. Look at Sabrina, the sister of Jessica when faced with delay and denial! My client too is a victim of denial your honor, even though it is a glass of drink - even if all the points accused by the prosecution is true.
Also one more point your honor, if they beat a dog or donkey in a film it is punishable. It is the power of media through which some seasonal politicians made their entry. We have political celebrities order plantation of trees to compensate for the cut branches for their arrival. There is however no serious thoughts given by the same media to find out or cure the cause of human suffering at large. Instead all of their actions were there to support to oppressor.
In this world of delays, denials and blind to essence world I request justice to my poor client the benefit of doubt. Then the court may ask a question, if not my client who must have killed Jessica. Why not the celebrity presented there? Who is the witness? The lady who played solo in the provocative dress who managed to get the extra drink even after they announced the drink is over?
This is the kind of effect the movie created on me. The movie is just above average, nothing special. Probably people go to theatre with an emotional view like it better.
