I purchased a Nissan Terrano 1.6 XL(Petrol) in April 2016 from Sterling Vehicle Sales Pvt Ltd. After a few days, I noticed that the vehicle stalls and the engine switches off at slow speed in heavy traffic, unless the accelerator pedal in kept pressed, even in 1st gear. I felt that this was because the engine speed(RPM) was low. I took it to the service station and asked them to increase the RPM slightly. I was told that this is not possible as the RPM is set in the factory and cannot be changed. However, they agreed to try a ‘jugaad’ and put a small padding below the accelerator pedal. I was told that the fuel consumption will increase slightly by about one KPL. The RPM was now about 800 to 900, I was told.
Unfortunately this has not worked and the car still stalls, when the traffic is nose to tail. However, the most worrisome aspect is the low mileage. I filled up the tank only this morning and the average I got was 7.38 Km per litre. This was about the same as the average fuel consumption being reflected in the computer in the car, which showed an average of 7.4. The rated fuel efficiency claimed by the manufacturer is 13.2. With the cost of petrol being almost Rs 70 per litre, the cost of running the Terrano works out to Rs 10 per kilometre. The RPM appears to be high but the car still stalls.
I might mention that I am 72 years old and have been driving since 1965, when I got my driving licence. I have driven in the Himalayan Rally thrice, from 1982 to 1984. Most of my driving has been on petrol cars and I have never faced such a problem before. I am not sure if there is a problem in the basic design or the particular car that I have got is defective.
I am very unhappy with the car. I would not recommend it to anyone now.
