I think Moulin Rouge is a totally ''timepass'' movie as one would call it in Mumbai. As soon as the swirling , gaudy riot of colours, the stunning start is complete, your eyes are feasted on all kinds of curious filmy sets. Of course the MOULIN ROUGE (Red Windmill) is always swirling, lurking somewhere in the frame throughout the film.
Satine (Nicole Kidman) the courtesan, who is taught to ''love'' for riches, and who has never known what true love is, suddenly can think of nothing else but love, (for really no rhyme or reason but a fool's infatuation for her!); then she has consumption (TB) and is dying. But God, does she keep us waiting, lengthening the film and driving the viewer to stifled yawns , then loud ones, and WORSE...!
There was a burst of laughter and loud applause every time the hero or heroine broke into a song in the least expected tragic or emotional moments...Sounds familiar? ...The good ol' tear jerkers of the golden indian film era, Right ? Then it got EVEN WORSE!! Comedy in the midst of a murderous chase with the gun gliding about and waiting solitary to be picked up by the right man alone!
And now it got REALLY WORST !!! The audience in the theatre started trooping out of the cinema hall chanting ''AIWA ! AIWA! AIWA?? AIWA! AIWA!! OH what fun! the moment was hilarious ...those were truly the only few seconds of the film, when the viewers were tickled in unison ! Sheer magical, unforgettable moments.
