After a long long time, I happened to get a chance to see a Malayalam movie. “Meesa Madhavan” is a light film weaved with marvelously enacted comedy scenes. The film has its light and heavy moments. Truly speaking I enjoyed the film, laughed loudly to my hearts full forgetting that I m no more a kid. As I watched it on CD, I could not see it at one stretch. The next time I wanted to watch the remaining, I had to watch it from the start but still it did not bore me and made me laugh louder..

Meesa means the moustache in Malayalam and Madhavan is the name of the character of the film. Now the main character has a moustache so “Meesa Madhavan”. Now you would wonder, why such importance to a moustache…? Keep reading…

What is Meesa Madhavan all about…

Chekk is a small village in Kerala. As normally any village in Kerala would have, it has its temples, the temple priests, the advocate, the electrician(who is always on the electric pole), the youth leader of a political party, the lakes, the fields, the rich and the poor innocent people far from the outside world which has advanced a lot in thoughts and technologies. So now this village has a thief also. This thief’s name is Madhavan who did not have any different reasons to become one. The same old reasons where the rich Pillaichan (played by Jagathy) duped Madhavan’s father of his 25 cents land and is now taxing them with backbreaking interests which Madhavan pays without fail every month. So you guessed it right where does the money come from to pay such heavy interests. Simple he steals…

Besides all these, Madhavan is loved by all even by the head constable except the villain of the film. The police station is desperately waiting for its new S.P. to join. Madhavan has this tendency of helping anybody in distress be it the head constable who urgently needs some money for his daughter’s marriage. As usual the heroine Rukmini (played by Kavya Madhavan) is daughter of Pillaichan. Initially misguided by her father, she plays against Madhavan but when she realized that one of her tricks happened to ruin Madhavan’s sister’s marriage and the timely advise from her mother makes her realize all her mistakes.

This love couple now has to face some obstacles from Pillaichan and his team. Not forgetting that the S.P. has joined…much to add to the miseries of this couple. Fighting these obstacles love reigns supreme against hatred and revenge. The baddies do get what they deserve and vice versa.

The characters :

Meesa Madhavan : played by Dileep, one of the finest actors of Malayalam film Industry. Expert at comedy which comes naturally to him. I love him for his spontaneity and sparkling performances. Nobody could have done the role of a thief this better as he has done. Brilliantly enacted comedy scenes as well as emotional scenes makes him a darling of the masses.

Rukmini : played by Kavya Madhavan, she looks beautiful and natural. Gaaon ki gori is what you can define her as. Even she shines as Rukmini, steals your heart just the way she steals Madhavan’s. Her innocent looks, long tresses and beautiful big eyes compliments the character of Ruku. The initial wickedness and later on the goodness has been performed very well by her.

Pillaichan: Played by Jagathy, One of the finest & great character actors of Malayalam film industry. Show him any role and he does it to perfection. Nearing the age of sixty, you find him more lively than the main characters of the film. I have grown up seeing his films and hardly can I remember seeing any Mallu film without Jagathy being in it. Absolutely fabulous acting by this actor as the villain combined with comedy. You would love to see the scenes between Madhavan and Pillaichan.

Nambeeshan (Head Constable) : played by Oduvil Unnikrishnan. Great performance by this character actor too. He excels in showing his helplessness when he has to question Madhavan in front of the S.P. and beat him black and blue.

Rest all characters do their parts well.

The scenes which I enjoyed :

  1. Madhavan breaking into the house of an army man. Where he sees Pillaichan with the army man’s wife. He just could not believe his eyes and catches him red handed. This encounter of Pillaichan and Madhavan makes roll into laughter.

  2. Madhavan breaking into the house of Pillaichan. Pillaichan, his friend and his daughter getting ready to catch the thief. This sequence has some hilarious moments and some hilarious dialogues.

  3. The scene where Pillaichan is all set to kill Madhavan wherein Madhavan hides behind the army man (Pushkaranchettan) who just comes to the village to visit his family. Pillaichan standing dumb and feeling helpless of not getting to catch hold of Madhavan. Simple superb expressions and great performances.

Why Meesa :

The moment Madhavan seeing any person rolls his moustache (meesa) upwards on both sides means he is going to break into that person’s house that night which is a well known fact of the village. This habit does ditch him and make him the victim of many misunderstandings. That’s the reason of him being called “Meesa Madhavan”.

A movieshetra release, Direction by Laljose, Music by Vidhyasagar, this movie makes you feel that touch of village which is so natural engulfed in beauty and beautiful people, so pure, so innocent and free from all pollution of the cities or metros. The way the director has treated this films is absolutely fantabulous and I feel that he has achieved what he wanted to achieve. The songs in the film are very well picturised and are a hit in Kerala.

Over all, a movie that entertained me and made me laugh loudly after a long time.
