I've seen very few Hindi movies these days that are outright funny . Most are low-grade comedies with bad timing , corny sound effects and way too much overacting (David Dhawan anyone ? ) . The classics were pretty good (Jaane bhi do yaaron , Golmaal ) , but during the last 15 yaers or so , I can think of only a few movies that have been memorable and really made me laugh ( Andaz Apna Apna , Hera Pheri , DCH . Well , enough of nostalgia , the point is Masti is one of those movies .
This is not a thinking man's movie . If you are looking for an intricate plot , subtle witticisms and clever wordplay , I suggest you look somewhere else . This is laugh out loud, no holds-barred comedy . It's just one funny dialogue and situation after another .
The story is about these three college friends who get married and later find out that marriage isn’t what they expected it to be . After a chance meeting , they decide that in order to save their sanity and their marriages , they should have an extra-marital affair and then compare notes . Things really come to a boil , when all three fall for the same woman who decides to blackmail them .Unfortunately she gets murdered and the blame falls on the unfortunates three . Sounds implausible and far-fetched ? Well it is and the fact is ,it doesn’t make any difference to the movie !
Aftab ShivDasanireferred to as ''despo'' by his friends gets paired with Tara Sharma , who spends the entire day fasting and praying for his health and is so caught up in this that she has no inclination for the three-letter-word . He has all these loud expressions and as the most frustrated member it suits his role perfectly . Tara has a naive look throughout the movie and keeps misinterpreting her husbands advances . Other than that , her acting isn't much good and she has a squeaky voice .
Vivek Oberoi , the Casanova of the group , gets Amrita Rao , a very insecure and possessive wife , who keeps on calling her husband every 10 minutes or so to make sure that he is missing her. She even wears a t-shirt with his picture on it ( I t looks really funny on screen!) . His acting is ok , nothing much to write about .
Ritesh Deshmukh , referred to as ''phattu''(coward) is with Genelia D'Souza... , who is a control freak and his WWE-Obsessed mother-in-lawArachna Singh .This is the funniest couple in the movie . Both of them force him to keep a vigorous exercise regime , and even give him pocket money so he can go to work . Ritesh does not even need to act . Just seeing him onscreen with his expressions at the latest calamity makes you laugh out loud .Arachana as usual is too loud and overacts way-too much .
The jokes are mostly-double meaning dialogues and impossible situations involving among other things , break-ins by the ''Golden Glove Gang'' , Ritesh taking his wife and ma to an , ahem, educational movie ''Night Queen''(which turns out to be soft-porn) , and a tango with a transvestite . The timings are perfect . To call it a ''sex-comedy'' , would be pushing it .
The supporting cast is also very good , with Satish Shah (working as a sexologist in the same clinic as Ritesh) throwing in a good performance . Ajay Devgan is the mean cop who has these menacing one-liners (overacted to perfection) and is out to get our three unfortunate heroes . Lara Dutta looks gorgeous and that’s about it . Not much scope for her acting in this movie.
The screen play is really good and is the high point of the movie . The movie is tight , never lags and one scene follows the other perfectly . Music is pretty humable .
Now for the down points . Some of the gay jokes are overdone , and the ending is a little hard to swallow . But other than that I couldn't think of any other drawbacks to this movie .
In short , this is one total time-pass movie . Go watch it and enjoy yourself without taxing your mind too much . <bi> The cynics among you are probably saying that ''if he liked this movie , he doesn’t have much of a mind to tax anyway ''
