After "Raanjhnaa", not only Tamil Nadu, but even bollywood would have understood that Dhanush is not your average actor by any means. He proves it yet again in Maryaan, a typical story which you cant imagine without Dhanush.

strong text

Plot: Maryan is the story of power of love, which pushes an ordinary man to do extraordinary feats. The first half is the tale of how love pushes Dhanush to separate his native land and the second half is how love empowers him to get back to his seas.

Cast:

Cast comes up with close to perfect performance. There were lot of scenes where Dhanush could have over did, but he underplays and brings out the right dose of emotion. Look out, this young man is heading towards unconquered peaks. His evolution from "Manmada Rasa" to "Kadal Rasa" is already pleasing. Parvathy is the fulcrum around which story moves and she emotes well. Support cast dont have much screen space, yet they dont disturb us much.

Crew:

There are two other invisible heroes in the movie. They come up often and make your realize their presence now and then. If you feel the songs are good, they are only even more better because they blend with the narration. The BGM is one of the best from ARR. Camera handled by Marc Koninckx (From France) transports you to the seas in the first half.

Bharat Bala proves his mettle by delivering a technical delight. You might have known him earlier as the man behind "Vande Mataram" and "Jana Gana Mana" videos. Overall where the plot lacks pace, the technical aspects cover much more for it.

Cons:

None of the characters other than lead pair, have enough screen space or depth to make impact. It tends to make the depiction look little artificial. The pace might be slow for those who dont tend to pay attention to visual delights.

Verdict:

Maryan is a must if you admire movies with quality. It might not be your normal popcorn movie, but will make you feel good. I would rate this as the best in Tamil so far in this year. 4/5. Attempts like Maryan is an effort to give life to Tamil cinema. Wish he survives. Even if you don't know the language, you can bet your money on this for the visual and audible pleasures.
