Worth Watching
Iam a Kamal/ Ameer fan and a movie or two that I watch in theaters in a year shall be casting them. But I will not allow my liking come in the way of my criticism
Kamal Haasan’s latest movie Manmadha Banam (Manmadhan Ambu.. Tamil ) was released on 23rd Dec’10 in Telugu and Tamil simultaneously.
There are lots of expectations on on the movie (review) as it has legendary Kamal Haasan playing lead role. Kamal Haasan not only played the hero in Manmadha Banam but also has written story and screenplay for this film . He has also sung few songs particularly the signature song .
The Details of Manmadha Banam …
Story:
Ambujakshi the Ambu (Played by Trisha) is a film heroine who falls in love with a multi millionaire Madan Gopal (played by Madhavan). M adan doesn’t believe in Ambu’s chastity due to her profession. He thinks that she is having affairs with her costars or others in the profession.
After a film shoot while Trisha and Madan are on their way back from Kodaikanal, they have a verbal duel on the topic while she was driving their Hummer SUV. She knocks out a ford icon due to lack of concentration and fials to notice that the ford car has crashed into the valley.
However, both Ambu and Madan continue relation and she had to go for a shoot followed by a Holiday in paris and Greece. Madan appoints an Ex Army major R. Bushanam , Raja Bhushanam (Kamal Haasan) to spy on Ambu, while she is on this holiday trip to Europe along with her close friend Deepa (Sangeetha).
Bushanam does this detective business as he in dire need of money as his friend Raja (Ramesh Arvind) is on the death bed fighting with cancer.
Bushanam tries to loyal to Madan at the beginning but the latter gets decived in paymyments from him at one point. So Bushanam applies negative tactics to have Madan in control. There is a twist in the tale towards the interval point. Better I shall not reveal those details in the review.
Flow and Handling :
Most sequences are good with thought provoking dialogues . However, you would feel that the pace is s bit slow and definitely the treatment is quite different from what I had ever seen. A few scenes are stretched too badly that you lose patience and move uneasily in your seat.
But if You miss even a minute , You wouldn’t understand most of the rest. T here are may twists and turns and intricate dialogue sequences which cannot be appreciated by Mass audience .
The best part that can be remembered and praised about is the way the flashback of an accident of Kamal is picturized. Showing his flashback episode walking back in time with a song playing in the background is too good and unprecedented technique .
The film is almost over after Kamal narrates his flashback and the director then started to pull out a comedy out of this by creating lot of confusion among the characters.
The climax is super strtched and Kamals movies off late have been suffering from this lacuna.
The Cast :
Kamal Haasan did a good job as an actor. Characters like these are cake walk for him. He handles himself with ease and élan from the word go..
Madhavan in his complex role is also good. He did an excellent job. His boozed out second part is very authentically played and I doubt he was really drunk to do them so. On a whole he did fine. Trisha is also good.
The dubbing was not very Authentic except for Kamal (done by SPB).
Other Details :
Cinematography is fine with a good sense of aesthetics. Music by Devisri Prasad is noisy but acceptable. Editing could have been better. Story written by Kamal Haasan is good. Production values are rich. Barcelona is well depicted.
To sum it up Manmadha Banam can also be classified as a romantic tragedy than romantic comedy!
Pros:
- Kamal Haasan, Novelty, aesthetics, story, Cruze scenes
Cons :
Slow pace esp in the end
Noisy Music
Stretched climax
Too intellectual
Conclusion :
I wish this film is well recived as otherwise we will only keep seeing Rakta Charitraa and other substandard stuff. I will call this film a serious suspense comedy.
