Lots of controversies, lots of cases in this movie. They took four years to complete and release this film. Lots of researches; lots of actors; lots of money. But lastly, is it a flop? Or it is a blockbuster? Let’s find it.
Controversies:-
1)Relation between prostitute and Mangal Pandey:- The Pandey family and Uttar Pradesh government is angry with this incident.
2)Hills in Barrakpore: - There is no hill at about 50 kilometer distance from Barrakpore.
3)Some historians think Mangal Pandey was an accidental hero of Sepai mutiny; it was just a commercial cause to make Mangal Hero in this movie.
4)British people think the English torture is not correctly exposed in this movie.History is not correctly revealed in this movie.
Some Thoughts :-
I went to watch the movie at about fifteen days later after releasing this movie. It was almost declared flop in our college among my friend. I was eager to watch the movie from the first day but didn’t get time. However after watching the movie I can’t decide still that this is a big flop or not.
After “Lagaan” and “Dil Chahta Hai” our expectation on Amir Khan raised to sky. Bhuban really won our heart. Now Lagaan and The Rising both is based on periodic idea. But there are some sound differences between Lagaan and The Rising. Lagaan was not based on true story, it was just an imagination and it was not tough job for the directors to set up the movie on that imagination. With some punch of patriotic filling it was really a blockbuster. But The Rising is completely a different kind of movie. It was a true story with some historical value. And there wasn’t much information about Mangal Pandey. They had to do lot of research works on him. But I think there were lack of information about Mangal Pandey that leads to such controversies.
Some historians think Mangal Pandey was a drug addicted and angry soldier. One day suddenly he started to revolt against the British east India company. Then he was killed in a court marshal. It was just a coincidence that the incident was at the beginning of the Mutiny. They also think that unnecessarily Mangal Pandey was made hero.
Though The Rising has some plus points. Acting of Amir Mangal Khan is really great. In an interview Khan told that the difference between Mangal and Bhuban is calm but Mangal is very angry. I can tell you one thing, in the whole film Mangal never seemed like Amir khan, it was a truly great performance by this great actor.
Conclusion:-
But above all I think it doesn’t deserve to be flop. It does have great photography, choreography and acting. But lack of compactness is the main problem of the movie.
