Everyone Falls in Love with Someone...Somehow!

Roared the hoardings of Maine Pyar Kiya in 1989 competing with the likes of Ram Lakhan, Parinda and Chandini.

If you are wondering why on earth should someone recommend this long forgotten movie it is because you must definitely belong to one of the categories below:

You have met the love of your life and you are rehearsing your lines – Do you? Or Do you not!! then this movie would offer a few tips like sending letters thro’ Kabootar (pigeon) and would avoid all embarrassment in case you face the sandal. And gals would learn to keep their guys on tether hooks by saying “I Love” ….”Abhi mood nahi hai”

You are so depressed with your mundane work and day-to-day life apart from the action movies like Ab Tak Chappan. This has doses of Laxmikant Berde’s attempts to be funny (which is close to imitating monkeys) the Gulabia jokes (this damsel would put all kantabais of today to shame) and the romantic one-liners.

You want to watch a movie along with your visiting nana, nani, mama, mami, bua, daada, daadi without attempts to visit the loo or hide your face behind the cushions in certain scenes (since family movies are a rare occurrence these days)- a wholesome family entertainer.

You are an aspiring filmmaker and would like the secret formula for the box office hits then this is your right choice. This has all the ingredients of a melodramatic masala movie– baap-beti (father-daughter), rich man-poor man, bhai, maa, villain and villie- against the background of romance yet it managed to become a runaway hit esp. because of the immaculate handling of the subject by director Sooraj Barjatya.

You are an ardent fan of Alok Nath (since I suddenly find many on MS) and are waiting to see one of his best performance - His nakhras are many (the first scene where he cries –baap-beti kaa senti, the flashback scene with his jighri dost Rajiv Varma, the scene where after he comes back from Dubai and has varthalaab with Rajiv Varma again, confronting Salman to earn 2000 bucks…)

Other reasons would be you are a Music Composer and are working on churning out songs inspired by Western numbers -check out Aaate Jaate and Mere rang Mein. You are an animal rights activist and you would want to Thank Suman (Baghyashree) for saving a khabootar from the hands of a predator (Monish Behl).

The Synopsis:

Actually there isn’t much story to write about since if you have seen one masala movie you have seen them all but still in my efforts to woo people to watch this movie – Poor Dad (Alok Nath) leaves his sweet, docile daughter Suman (Baghyashree-the one movie wonder) in his friend’s (Rajiv Verma) house while he is off to Dubai. Enter the US of A returned son Prem (Salman Khan in his pre chest barring days) who instantly falls for Suman after some drama of a platonic friendship. Prem’s father is against the love between them because of the usual class prejudices apart from the villainous efforts of Monish Behl and Ajit Vachhani. The melodrama continues with Prem leaving his home and standing on his own feet despite all hardships, to convince Suman's father of his love for her. And of course, there is the mandatory dishum-dishum at the end where all the good guys get together and dispose off of the villains.

Entertaining scenes:

The scene where Prem and Suman meet for the first time in the loo. Prem has just come back from airport and heads towards the bathroom and relieves himself when Suman also enters into the bathroom and they say “Hi” to each other then they realize and he says “aaj Kal Knock karne ka zammana nahi rahaa” to which Suman retorts “Aaj Kal lock karne ka zamaana na raha”

Prem gets frustrated with Suman who does not tell him the three magic words that he is dying to hear and Suman teases him no end.

What sets MPK apart is the sensitivity that the young director shows in handling the romance. Prem and Suman seem to be made-for-each-other.

How can this review be complete without mentioning the music of this movie by Raam Laxman– people enjoyed Aate Jaate (although it was a copy of “I just called to say” by Steve Wonder), Kabootar jaa was a song, which is perhaps, reused the maximum number of times in other movies, Aajaa Shaam Hone Aayi and the most romantic number “Dil Deewane”.

So you still would not watch this movie, no problem you can catch it on Zee Cinema next time they telecast it.
