This is the story of a normal man in an abnormal world. The main protagonist is Ajay Devgan, for whose performance I actually went for the movie.
Ajay is a grown up, with the mind & intelligence of a 7 year old. He lives a simple yet happy life with his group of friends. Enter Esha Deol, the neglected daughter of a wealthy businessman (Anupam Kher) who has no time for his daughter. The poor child take up drugs to fill the emptiness in her life. She meets Ajay one fine rainy evening. Slowly she is drawn towards the simplicity of this man & feels at home in the loving atmosphere of his small group of friends. She gets all the love which she never got from her father. In the event, she conceives a daughter but soon leaves her family (and daughter), fearing that she might lose her new found happiness.
7 years later, Ajay is confronted with Anupam Kher, the wealthy businessman who wants custody of his granddaughter & moves court. Not wanting to part with his daughter, he calls upon the best lawyer in town (Sushmita Sen), a divorcee & a very busy lawyer. After much persuasion, she agrees to take up Ajay's case. The courtroom battle that follows forms the plus point of the movie. Each side provides concrete reasons to gain custody of the child.
Credit should be given to the actors who have given some brilliant performances including the child artist, though I can't say that Ajay's performance was exceptional in portraying a mentally challenged person. I haven't seen the original movie I am Sam so I can't do any comparison between the two films. The pace of the movie is slow. It is also hampered by too many songs in the beginning of the movie. On the whole, the movie is worth watching. Go for it.
