While in Bombay you have a wide choice of places to go to, if you are a lover of Fish food. There are any number of places in Bandra, Shivaji Park, Worli and in town at Fountain or Fort.
Though I have had Fish in more wellknown, plush places, the place which has really stolen my heart (as of now) is M A H E S H LUNCH HOME. It's not the 'place', really, but the 'Fish preparations' which I am never going to get over. Maybe I prefer the Manglorean Fish preparation to the Portuguese type ! You should try it once to know exactly what I mean.
The Ambiance:
Very practical table arrangements, not too private, but strictly OK. Air-conditioned, well-mannered waiters, Beer, Drinks served. No restrictions. Smoking, No smoking areas on request.
The Food:
Very, very good, in fact Excellent ! The Manglorean Fish food is a speciality. They make excellent Fish in gravy, called Fish Masala. They have delicious Pomphret, Surmai, Mackerel(Bangda), Prawn Masala... I love their POMPHRET Masala (slightly spicy gravy)
They also have a second type of gravy, thicker due to ground coconut content (non-spicy) which is called ''GHASHI''.But I prefer the former. The prawn ghashi is delicious.
Apart from fish, they also serve delicious chicken and mutton dishes.
GRILLED OR FRIED :
Grilled Fish and Chicken (called Tanduri Fish/chicken) is just great! They serve the fish Whole on a platter, or filets, as you wish it. Fried Pomphret is what I love to order, not whole, but as filets. I have seen customers who order just the Tanduri Fish/Chicken or fried fish and enjoy it with drinks.
NEER DOSA :
If you wish to avoid rice, or chapatis, or parathas,..you have a choice of the most wonderful thing in the world...''NEER DOSA''--they are thin Dosas or Crepes made of Rice flour. So thin, light, puffy, and delicious, they go very well with fish curry or masala. One plate of Neer Dosa, contains 4 neatly folded Neer dosas. So light and easy to polish them off! Would make a lovely lunch indeed!
OTHER MENU :
Apart from Manglorean food, you also have a choice of Chinese, Mughlai, Punjabi Menu
SWEETS/DESSERTS :
Apart from Indian sweets, they also offer icecreams, fruit salads, Nescafe or Filter coffee.
YOUR BILL :
The rates are reasonable, not exorbitant at all. Its VALUE FOR MONEY
SITUATION :
Postal address is Cowasji Patel Street, Near BOMBAY STORES, Fountain.
You could also take the Pherozeshah Mehta Rd. and turn into the lane at the corner of which you see the UTI Bank. Inside the lane, stands the MAHESH Lunch Home on the opp. footpath.(The Thomas Cook Travels, and BOMBAY STORE area)
