I urgently needed some coconut milk powder as I was expecting guests for lunch and got a small packet of MAGGI Coconut Milk Powder. I’ve been using Coconut Milk Powder for ages now as my husband is from Kerala and we often cook Malayalee dishes which require Coconut Milk.
Over the years I’ve preferred KPL Shudhi Coconut Milk Powder from Thrissur. There is also Dabur Home made Coconut Milk but that is also not up to standard for the preparations.
The manufacturing date on the packet is 21.11.15 which is not really that old for use.
This packet, however, created hell for me - I first used it with the sauce I had prepared to adjust the taste and it split or curdle. I threw that out and tried a fresh tablespoon or so of the powder with a Thai curry paste and it split again. I had to throw the lot out. By this time I knew I could not take any more risks and changed my mind about serving that particular dish. I had to begin another one from scratch, one which did not call for coconut milk.
Later in the day I sniffed at the contents of the packet - it emitted a stale smell.
Now, the shop from which I got the pack is a fairly decent neighbourhood grocery store with a roaring business. We’ve shopped there for years. Though I can take it back to them and show them both the effect on mixing with water as well as the smell, I do not want them to feel to blame.
The point is that Nestle takes India for a royal ride and we don’t learn our lesson.
Why should we buy coconut milk from a Swiss company? What kind of sense does it make? does Switzerland have coconut trees? Does India lack excellent food manufacturing and packaging techniques or coconut trees?
Nestle has proven that it can give us rubbish and we will lap it up, sad to say.
