LUCKY – NO TIME FOR LOVE (movie review)

Lucky is one of most anticipated film of 2005, and lots of expectations are riding behind it. Salman Khan Fans have been waiting for this movie for almost two years now. The promos of the film look excellent and the music has already topped the charts for almost a month now. So, does Lucky meet the expectations that people have for it? YES, it does, but for most part of it. And especially with Salman Khan huge star power at Box-office, he’ll definitely make this movie succeed.

SUMMARY OF THE FILM

Lucky [Sneha Ullal] is the quintessential dreamer - soft, beautiful and gentle. Her one big belief is that if you search from the bottom of your heart, you will find not just the rainbow, but also the crock of gold at the end of the rainbow. One fine morning Lucky is riding to school, praying that she clears her test, scheduled on that date. But her journey to school becomes her desperate journey of survival.

Caught unawares by an unexpected wave of insurgency in St. Petersburg, Lucky tries to reach for safety. As dread and fear overtake, she meets a stranger, a fellow countryman Aditya [Salman Khan], who's smart, wicked, charming. They have nothing in common. She's excessively naïve and he blasé. They are bound together by just one common goal - to reach home safely.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

The direction was good, because for the first part, it kinds of starts of slow, and it gradually picks for the better. For doing direction the first time, I was very happy with it!

The action was great, it was perfect for the film.

From a writer point of view, it wasn’t great. Mithun character isn’t well-written and that might hurt Mithun fans a lot. And some questions still remain unanswered (well, 99% of Indian movies also have that)

Dialogues are good, nothing great or extraordinary.

The cinematography is definitely winning an award because they capture Russia so beautiful.

The background music is simply amazing.

PERFORMANCES

I’ll admit I’m a huge Salman Khan fan, however he tends to act a little bit too much in the first couple of scenes, however right after the interval, Salman Khan delivers a superb performance that fans will appreciate him. From comedy, to a romantic guy, and to a emotional guy, Salman Khan does it all in this film. Salman Khan fan following will definitely multiply after this film. Salman Khan fans will be happy that their hero has finally come back. Salman Khan got a lot of cheers from the gyals and his intro scenes. Overall, a true knock-out performance from one of Bollywood bankable star from hamara Salman Khan. LUCKY wouldn’t have been possible without Salman Khan.

Shena Ullal does well in her first film. She may not deliver a knock-out performance, but for her first film, I was very impressed. She acts good, but she needs to get out of the kiddish voice. Other wise, this performance will get enough appreciation due to because this is her first film.

Mithun does tend to disappoint a little, but I knew he was playing a small role in the film, so I wasn’t surprised. Mithun delievers an average performance, but he does make his presence felt and that’s what really matters. He got a lot of cheers from the fans (esp. his intro scene.)

Supporting cast was either wasted or did an average performance.

MUSIC

Adnan Sami can simply described in one word, MESMERIZING. Almost all of the songs are superb. “Jaan Meri Jaa”, “Lucky Lips”, “Shayad Yahi To Pyar”, “Chori Chori” are easily the pick of the lot. And the best part of it, the picturizations of the songs are lavish. This soundtrack so far has my vote for Best Music. Get the album if you don’t have it.

OVERALL

Overall, Lucky definitely lives up to the huge expectations and will definitely be a HIT at the Box-Office (Due to excellent opening, and Salman Khan star power). It may not be a classic film, but for sure, you’ll get the main ingredient of every film, ENTERTAINMENT. Like what people say, don’t go and expect a serious film, sit down with your family and enjoy a good entertainment film. With terrific promotion undertaken by T-Series, besides no major opposition for the next two weeks as well as commencement of summer vacations, and with Salman huge star-power at box office, LUCKY should keep its investors in the plus, from the business point of view and will make this movie a HIT.

8/10 (A-). Great film!
