The much anticipated blockbuster film, LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, was released on video VHS/DVD on 26th August in North America, The DVD features two discs, the three hour long movie on one, and the making of different segments of the film on the other disc. I got mine from the Best Buy store for $24.88. HMV outlets are selling this for $28.95. They are anticipating an all time record sales for this beautifully crafted film based on J.R. Tolkein's book.

A few years ago when the Star Wars triology was released on video, they too enjoyed a phenomenal success. Seeing this, George Lucas released another set of the video with more 'never before seen' footage. Again, many spent their money to see the new scenes. Similarly, in November this year, a special set of 4 discs featuring the TWO TOWERS with 28 minutes of additional footage as well as some more behind the scenes and special effects will be released by Peter Jackson, the director of the triology. Now, many of those who bought the current set, may want to buy the new set as well, in time for Christmas. Talk about exploitation!!

Nevertheless, the newly released DVD, with 53 segments for easy access is worth watching. Filmed almost entirely in New Zealand, the cast and crew spent several months there, in the Winter, the Spring and the Summer. They worked long and hard. Elija Wood as Frodo, Sean Astin as Frodo's best buddy Sam, as well as Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee and a host of others made the Two Towers one of the best films ever made. The computer generated life like character Smeagol also adds much zest to the film.

The DVD set is available in wide screen or full screen formats as usual with English, French and Spanish sub titles with a click of the remote. The clarity of the images is excellent. The music and the dialogue blends well and evenly throughout the film. With a full Home Entertainment System ( with 8 speakers), the sound is naturally much effective.

In North America, renting a new release cost as much as $6 to $7 for a single night, and risk as much per day if one fails to return it on time. No wonder then, many rush to buy the video for keeps!

The last part of this successful LORD OF THE RINGS triology will be released in theaters around the world in December 2003. Like the INDIANA JONES, MATRIX and the STAR WARS series, this film will also rake in millions of dollars in the box office and in video sales, and may remain as one of the best film trilogy for years to come.
