Living in North America for several decades now, I can only say this topic can only be defined in generalizations.
I would say there are several holidays that are uniquely American. Thanksgiving is a day where families gather to give thanks for their bounty and eat a turkey dinner complete with all the trimmings! The 4th of July is the day we celebrate our independence. Picnics and fireworks are in order. Memorial Day is when we remember those who died in war and also a time to congregate for picnics. President's Day is a day to remember our leaders especially Washington and Lincoln. Martin Luther King Day is a day we take time to reflect on the accomplishments of this man of peace.
One of the most exciting aspects of living in the United States is ethnic people keep their customs alive! I have attended Indian festivals that would rival any in India. I have also been blessed to be able to attend Cinco de Mayo celebrations, Vietnamese Tet festivities, Saint Patrick Day parades, Columbus Day parties and Chinese New Year activities. I have enjoyed the beauty of the traditional dances of Cambodia and the exuberant folk melodies of Russia. Traditions and customs survive and diversity is celebrated.
One of the most cherished traditions is freedom of religion. Although Christianity is the dominate faith, other religions flourish without fear of persecution. For example the Indian population in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania built a splendid Hindi Temple. In West Virginia, a beautiful Krishna complex graces the land. Buddist temples dot the landscape in California. Mosques call Islamic believers to worship. Jewish communities practice their faith and thrive.
I believe it is impossible to define traditions and customs in North America. In Ohio the largest population on Amish in the world live a lifestyle based on 19th century customs. In California the 21st century burst forth in flair and fashion. Yet for the most part, Americans are friendly and cordial! A visit to North America is a celebration of life!
