The happiest women, like the happiest nations, have no history.
As the name suggests, it is a story of a woman. To be very precise, it’s a journey of a woman*. It has got different phases and different characters but the message is crystal clear. It’s about the difference in gender. It’s a about the difference in life. We may be embarking about the empowerment of women in this 21st century but still there’s a place where nothing matters but the gender. The movie portrays the story / journey of a woman who has to step out from her home to support her family. It’s about her struggle, it about her sacrifice. It’s about her determination and it’s about her bravery. She fights with her destiny, she fights with the system. She does the compromises but still stands tall.
To portray the real picture of a woman is not that easy. One needs to understand the circumstances. A woman's whole life is a history of the affections. The heart is her world: it is there her ambition strives for empire; it is there her avarice seeks for hidden treasures. She sends forth her sympathies on adventure; she embarks her whole soul on the traffic of affection; and if shipwrecked, her case is hopeless -- for it is a bankruptcy of the heart. There might be different scenarios to prove the situations but in any case the sufferer remains same, the woman.
A complete woman is probably not a very admirable creature. She is manipulative, uses other people to get her own way, and works within whatever system she is in. In most of the cases a woman needs to be manipulative to make her own way. There might be other scenarios where she gets admiration without any manipulation but majority doesn’t follow this. System is not very favorable to women and hence there’s a difference in working habit as well. You can’t expect the same response from a woman professional which you generally do from a man.
Apart from this woman thing, there’s one more aspect of this story. It’s about being eldest daughter / son of your parents. I often believe that eldest daughter / son of any parent is a different creature. S/he is supposed to take the burden / responsibilities of his / her parents and same time s/he is also suppose to make them feel proud about their children. “Ma-baap ka naam roshan karna hai” kind of attitude is always there. If by any chance it’s not there, others will compel you to think in that direction. The expectations are always high from the eldest child. Sometimes the child has to do lots of sacrifices with his / her own life to meet the expectations. It’s a normal social pattern which is same from hundred of years and it still has the relevance.
This movie is a consolidated effort of Pradeep Sarkar and Aditya Chopra. You can’t treat this movie as a normal commercial movie which tries to entertain you but it shows the real meaning of cinema. Cinema is supposed to be the mirror of the society and the movie definitely obeys this definition. I know the box office report is not that great but still I would recommend this movie for its message. The script is not something very innovative but it’s surely a brave attempt to touch the basic problem of our society and portrays that so nicely on the screen.
The main character of this movie is Rani Mukherjee and her performance is excellent. Jaya Bachchan has also given a brilliant performance. Konkna Sen Sharma, Kunal Kappor and Abhishek bachchan are supportive actors and they have done justice with their roles. The best part of this movie is its direction. It’s brilliant. This movie is a must watch for every serious cinema viewer. If you understand cinema and if you treat cinema as a part of our society, you MUST watch this movie.
