I would say this is one of the boldest themes attempted in Bollywood in recent times. I thought I will dedicate this review to all those womenfolks on womens day who are struggling to get justice in a prejudiced system. The story deals with the life of Priya a college girl who falls in love and get pregnant ouside the wedlock. Her lover though he knows he is the father of the child disowns her and ask her to go for abortion. From here starts Priya's troubles. While her lover manages to lead a normal life Priya's world becomes topsy turvy. Her family, friends and society turns against her. But Priya sternly refuses for abortion. Finally the parents understands their mistake and stand by their daughter. Her childhood friend also stand by her and yes Priya does give birth to the child outside the wedlock. Some of the high points of the movie which raises pertinent questions to the society are:
- When Priya speaks to a crowd who are against her on the stage. Her words " If I was married today ppl would have satisfied every demand of mine. But I am not married and does it mean I am not a mother. What is growing inside me is not a life". Yes ppl have double standards for sex outside marriage. A man is responsible for the pregnancy only in the marriage bond. If pregancy happens to a woman outside wedlock it is virgin birth. The guy goes scot free and the girl suffers. Is this justice. Is this way our so called ancient Indian system works.
The second highpoint is the last scene in which Raj asks Priya to marry him and she refuses and tell him that she is going to marry her childhood friend who has stood by her through thick and thin. As far as I would say this one was the ultimate blow to the man's ego. As society excepts the woman to accept the man who is the father of her child. They will say he has come to u and why don't you relent. But nobody thinks how a woman could forget the agony he gave her. When she came winning thru the ordeal he wants her.
The director throughout the story have kept the character of Priya bold and Preity Zinta gave the performance of her life time in this movie. The heroes Saif and Chadrachur and fine. All and all this is a fine movie with relevant social message.
