Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)

CHD or coronary heart disease is killer number one in USA.

In India, its' exact position is not known but however even

young persons in the age group of 30 to 35 years suffer from

this dreadful disease.

Cause: Deposits made by cholesterols( LDL or low density

lipoproteins) in the arteries supplying blood to heart

muscles(arteriosclerosis).

Symptoms: Acute  or nagging chest pain(Angina).

But again for the patients suffering from diabetes may

not encounter angina and can have silent heart attacks.

Angina along with visible perspiration should be taken

seriously and doctor consulted immediately. Pain on the

neck region, spreading towards left arm etc. also could

be the symptom of CHD.In all cases of  clear cut or doubtful

CHD cases, the patient must be kept in lying down condition

only so that any undue strain can be avoided.

On many occasions, cause of chest pain could be merely due

to some indigestion or stomach upset. This aspect can be

verified by simple means or in case of doubt, doctor can

be consulted.

Remedies:

  1. TLC or Therapeutic Life-style Change. It practically

includes many aspects including diet/calorie intake control

associated with physical and mental health control.

  1. Controlling blood chemistry or lipid profile. Earlier

theories stressed on the reduction of low density

lipoproteins only but latest investigations point out

towards the maintenance of proper Total Cholesterol/High

Density Lipoprotein ratios.

  1. Selection of proper food(e.g. white onions) and

physical exercises can improve percentage of HDL in blood.

  1. Leading a stress free life by properly manipulating

the'3B management principle'( viz.1B for Boss, 2B for

Bibi and 3B for the Bachcha).

  1. Taking proper guidance from doctors/ seasoned patients.

  2. Taking proper decision for following the right track.

To go for by-pass surgery/angioplasty or  follow the

natural cure methods(availability of choice can be

decided from the condition of the patient after

angiography is carried out).

  1. Opting for multi-pathy or a combination of allopathy,

naturopathy and herbal medicines may be beneficial.

  1. Gathering up to date knowledge about plus and minus

points of surgical treatments /procedures from qualified

doctors. Getting feedback from  patients for knowing after

effects of surgical procedures.

  1. Removing'fear psychosis' from the minds of CHD patients.

10 Undergoing through Stress Test or Angiography to know

the exact situation if the situation demands.

  1. Building colaterals/cross connects/anastomas through

Yoga/physical exercises so that the necessity of  bypass

surgery is reduced or eliminated.

  1. Interacting with patients(forming a heart patient's

association).

CONCLUSION:'Rakkho payer garam( keep your feet hot),

pet naram( stomach soft) aur dimaag thanda( head cool);

aur doctor ko maro danda(and hit the doctor with a stick)':

is a popular proverb familiar in Uttar Pradesh. It means

that with proper exercise, keeping the colon clean( by

taking hygienic & balanced food with enough of fibres) and

leading a stress free life, one can avoid calling the

doctors. Same rule is also valid for avoiding CHD.

P.S. For some extra information on CHD, readers may also

go through the article'Heart Patient's Association'

available in Mouthshut Community centre, dated June 18,

2003;  if not inconvenient.
