What is this Pulse Polio?
Giving polio vaccine to a community at a single go in pulses is called pulse polio.
Why multiple doses?
Polio has three strains. Every time you are given vaccine you acquire immunity to only one strain. So you need to go for multiple doses for complete protection.
Why this is done in winters only?
This vaccine is a live virus vaccine, Gets easily killed by temperature. So it is easy to maintain its cold chain in winter. Remember routine immunization is to be carried out in summers also.
Why they say, all children should get it on same day?
Basically, we aim to eradicate polio from our country. This can only be done if we replace the wild strain responsible for disease, with strain in vaccine. After vaccine is given, virus is excreted from fecal route. Thus entering the eco system. Now if we give vaccine to 70% of population they will excrete this virus into environment and the rest of the children who were not vaccinated will also be benefited. In case you have missed this vaccination in past, it is possible your child might have got vaccine it through this route.
My child is sick shall I go to vaccination center?
Yes mild illness like fever diarrheas are not affected by vaccination.
I have been taking it for past 3 year, this year too?
Yes it is possible you child is protected(he may not, some times vaccine does not act), think about others who will be benefited, as I have tried to describe above.
So Polio vaccination is not only for your kid, it is a social cause. Help others Today 2nd Dec 2001 is pulse Polio day
