Pyar kya hota hai ? Kya kisi ko pyaar karne se kya pyaar ho jata hai ?
Radha asks her friend who wanted to know if she ever loved ‘Dev’. Dev was a case of Acute Mania and was treated by Radha (Waheeda Rehmaan), who is a nurse of a mental hospital. The treatment was successful and Radha was praised to death, but was she happy..? Probably she was that’s why she bid goodbye to Dev with a smiling face and the same line… ‘Mai nurse hu na bhujte saanso ke deep jalana hi mera dharm hai’…she wished Dev could hear the unsaid but no he could not. As she moved on with her life she reminded herself that …
Aaj ki raat chirago ki lau uchi kar lo…. Aapni aag mai jalna hoga .. aaj akele chalna hoga..
But Radha’s life did not end there, another day and Radha is approached again by doctors with another case of ‘Acute Mania’. If this one turns out to be successful they will be able to prove that in such cases patients can be treated without electric shocks. The senior doctor ‘Colonel Sahab’ believed that acute mania, is caused by the male child's longing for the unconditional love he gets from his mother, and after he separates from her, he searches for this love in other women, until he meets the one who he feels is capable of offering the same. But when that does not happen, the male child becomes cynical, full of hatred, and distrust and develops acute mania. He believed that it is possible if good relation should establish between the patient and the nurse. Radha did the same with Dev and she was expected to do the same with ‘Arun’ (Rajesh Khanna), yeah the same ‘acting’ of Love. But this time she said ‘NO’ ‘Mai aur acting nahi kar sakti’ .
Though other Nurse was roped in to do what Radha did but she failed miserably and somehow Radha took the case. Arun was just like many of us the ditched-in-love guy who has been affected to an extent that he has got a phobia of his ex galfriend ‘Sulekha’.
Radha ensures that she does all possible things within her purview and get Arun cured at the earliest and she succeeds and then fails one day … to know the how, when, why of the situation you need to watch Khamoshi, 1969 black-and-white Hindi classic directed by Asit Sen.
Khamoshi was a remake of Bengali film Deep Jwele Jaye (1959) which was directed by Asit Sen himself. Asit Senhas proved his milestone by doing justice to both the films equally. Directionwas apt and nowhere the audience feel the emotions exagerated.Strong performance by Waheeda Rehnaam leaves tears in your eyes, she has done justice to the role and at no point she fails the character of Radha. Rajesh kanna is best at what he has done in many films. The Story was penned by Ashutosh Mukherjeewas novice then though it has been copied by recent directors. Dialogues and Songs were written by Gulzaar and are worth memorizing. The Music was composed by Hemant Kumar with some soulful numbers which has been most popular songs. Especially ‘Tum pukar lo …’ was crooned by Hemant kumar himself. Other two popular numbers were ‘ Woh Shaam kuch Azeeb thi ..’ sang by Kishore Kumar and ‘ Humne dekhi hai in ankhon ki mehekti khoosbu’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
I have watched ‘Khamoshi’ almost a dozen times but it became close to my heart very recently for reasons I cannot share. The movie haunted me but at the same time helped me understand so many things which are beyond cinema and we know it as ‘Love’. It might be always remembered as a classic of 1969 which brought ripples in the cinema world. But movie leaves you with questions, confrontations and confessions of its own kind. Dialogues will haunt you for ages especially this one:
Kisi ko jehar dena, Aur kisi ki jindagi mai jehar ghol kar use pagal kar dena …
ek hi jaisa jurm hai..
So true, isn’t it a crime to love someone to death and leave them one fine day just like that. Leave them when they are addicted to you, when you have completely trapped them in your charm and stifled them with your attention. Just when they cannot think about a life beyond you, when their day begins with you and night ends with you. When they die to hear your smile and all their imaginations just surround one thing “YOU AND ONLY YOU”. Till they start bordering between Sanity and Insanity and in worst of cases Death seems like an only option.
Do we ever think? Do we ever turn to see what happened to those whom we loved and then left for silly reasons like ‘compatibility’ ‘look’ ‘time’ ‘priority’? Or best of the reason “I never noticed you at all” nor maybe “Do I know you?” Is any reason good enough to leave the person who gave you Love like no other on this earth? What is actually more vital ‘the person himself whom you love” or the ‘reason of leaving?’. You know why love is called blind.. So that we can be blind to all the flaws of that one person. Love is not about finding flaws, if that would have been the case no one in the world would ever fall in love becaz flaws come in as a package deal with every human being. So before stepping out and making the person yours it’s one fact needs to be kept in mind “Do not expect them to change as per your whims and fancies, Learn to accept imperfection!”
Loving is accepting him/her at Face value and of course being around each other at the end of the day.
Not loving someone is not a crime, loving them to death and then leaving them to die or turn insane is a worst crime…
You will leave them one day but probably their endless wait never leaves them..and they might be crooning this song all their life.
Tum pukar lo,
tumhara intezaar hai, tum pukar lo
Honth pe liye hue dil ki baat ham
Jaagte rahenge aur kitni raat ham
Muqtasar si baat hai tum se pyaar hai
Tumhara intezaar hai, tum pukar lo
Dil bahal to jaayega is khayal se
Haal mil gaya tumhara apne haal se
Raat ye qaraar ki beqarar hai
Tumhara intezaar hai…. !!
P.S: If you can still turn to those whom you loved someday and left because of some reason .. please do. No reasons are bigger than ‘Love’ .. and its just one life.
