Some films are made so unrealistic and so unconventionally that you are so confused and do not understand it's ending even after a ton thinking. KCK is one movie that would make you confused at the end. Is it really like that? Is this the ending? Where thriller and especially, psychological thrillers are very rare in Bollywood, KCK makes you more psychological. Director Vijay Lalwani's KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK is a failed attempt at suspense although it is sweet and good in case of the chemistry and love story. The movie is so much unbelivable that it leaves you questioned. As strange is the movie as it's lead character is!
We open up with Karthik ( Farhan Akhtar - who is acting in his third film), a shy man who is told IIM topper. But he is harrased by his boss( Ram Kapoor- who told himself as Rakhi's brother in her Swayambar) and colleagues. He is silently in love with Shonali (Deepika Padukone- who is glamourous and decent in the movie). And he gets a call from himself. That changes his life, he gets his love and his life blossoms! But he dosen't knows that this call will threaten his life and he decides to go behind it.
KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK starts off pretty good with some good comedy. And then it slightly drops, slightly ups. And then it's finally a love-story where Farhan-Deepika share good chemistry with two songs- Hey Ya and Uff Teri Ada both of which are hit but not in case of the film. The writing of the film is too weak especially during the thriller part. Although everyone is made curious before the film ends of knowing the truth. Till here the film has no complaints. But the climax is a big downer. At the end, you tell he has? (now I m not going to disclose the ending here) but it's too hard to grasp.
If Vijay Lalwani could have done something with the writing better it would have been a must watch thriller. Despite this, KCK has some plusses. The cast is perfect. There are some good comic moments and the love story is sweet. The pace of the movie is slightly slow especially during the second half. The second half goes excessively long and some trimming could have done better.
Farhan Akhtar shows essence, perfection and performance in his role! The actor manges to play the enter the role perfectly and you are bound to be get impressed by him. His shy and geek role is especially well performed. This is third film and he has already carved out his name as an actor perfectly. Although this not Deepika Padukone's film, she throws glamour and acting very well. After seeing her serious scenes in LOVE AAJ KAL, I felt she couldn't act. But in KCK she does them with perfection. She has a smaller role, but her impact is greater. Ram Kapoor is typical T.V. style actor. He hasn't got to show styles in his role and he performs his role as very ordinary.
KCK isn't a perfect film nor good film by plot but it's worth a watch by it's performances. That is were it scores 2.5 out of 5. Watch at your own risk!
