This is my review on the music of 'Kangalal Kaidhi Sei', a new Tamil movie.
This is my first at-a-stretch review, describing my unrevised feelings of the songs after listening for some 50 times or so...(quite customary for a new ARR album!)
1) Azhagiya cindrella
Nice melodious song that has a soft pace throughout...
The line 'azhagiya cindrella' has an engish-song feel..., with
soft guitaring in the background...
This is an example of a complex tune, one that has a
very long first stanza... i.e. Before the first interlude comes,
the tune is a single piece for more than 1 minute!, with the pitch
moving up and down!, sandwitched between the ultra melodious
'Azhagiya Cindrella' line!
(Other similar songs with such long first stanzas: 'Mana Madurai' from Minsara Kanavu and 'Nilavae Nilavae' from Nilaavae vaa)
Hariharan's voice is firm, as usual.
The female chorus is great!
I loved the soft pace of the song the most.
2) Thee kuruviya
Fast paced, stylistically-varied song that starts off cryptically in the
beginning and then then surprises us by moving into a
real melodious piece...
The second interlude is a real treat!
The lines ''YedhOma, YedhO Maathiri'' sung by the male
singer, that comes as a streak in the background
is an excellent new effect in tamil songs!
The way the song ends is also great, with a nice fusion between the
attributes/effects he had setup in the song.
Needless to say, Harini rocks!
The male voices are fresh!
I wonder how Rahman keeps finding new talent so constantly!
This is my favorite song in the movie.
3) En uyir thoziyae
i found the overall tune quite ordinary, but the song
elevated to great levels right from the first interlude onwards...
I'm a great fan of Rahman's use of the flute. The second
interlude has a nice flute piece...
Chinmayi is as great as she was in her debut!
I observed that Rahman has used an effect that has been seen
rarely... the mesmerising line 'Iniyavalae...' appears only in the first
stanza and never repeated.
Something like the song 'Mana Madurai' in Minsara Kanavu, where
the line 'Maettu saalayilae... Maattu vandiyilae...' appears just
once in the first stanza!
Or in the song 'Kandukondaen Kandukondaen' in the same movie,
where the lines 'Vennilaa Velichham Kinnatthil Vizhundhu' is never
repeated again!, but is beautifully rendered!
I think this is a nice trial by Rahman to change the pattern of
Tamil music from the same firstlines-Interlude-Stanza-Interlude...
pattern!
4) Anarkali
Good one, but my least favorite in this movie...
I feel that the tune is quite ordinary and there's not
much experimentation with new sounds in this song...
5) Aaha Thamizhamma
Last but not the least, this is a love@firstSound! number.
and it keeps growing on you every time you listen!
Rahman's got a sure-fire winner here!
The beats of the song in the beginning reminded me of
the great ''Shakalakha baby'' song from Mudhalvan!
And what a follow up!... The chorus singing of the
title line was a revelation! This piece has a children's song feel.
Soon this song rolls out into a Foot tapping number, interspersed
with amazing melodies and can please any kind of audience!
The interludes were terrific, with the male voice (blaaze?)
interspersed in the background like a rapstar...
He's actually saying every alphabet in Tamil! The tamil alphabets are also
interspersed rythmically throughout the song!
Great experiment by Rahman!
These innovations distiguish Rahman from other talented
MDs today!
I loved the part where she goes into high pitch in the first and
second stanzas, with the other female voice singing a rapid
(indecipherable?) line in the back ground! Perfectly complementing each other!
For lyrics buffs, I think this hi-pitch piece translates to
''
- Thumbikkai Kooondalai Suzhattittu varava...
Aaangalin veerathhai Thuvaithhittu varava...
- Vannathhi poochiyin Niram kurandhiduma...
Pengalin Vaazhvil Tharam kuraindhiduma...
''
Lyrics are a major plus of this song too, with nice
feminist lines!
I just can't wait to see the video of this song!
Second best song of the album for me, close to the Thee Kuruviya song...
__________
I would give 5 stars to this album, but this didnt give me quite the
''goose-pimples'' feel that Alaipayuthae (esp. the snehidhanae song) or Kandukondaen2 gave me... maybe it'll grow on me when I see the movie!
Nevertheless, this is a must-have album for any music fan!
Rahman has a sure winner here, don't think twice before buying this one!
On a good stereo, most of the songs can transport to a different
world altogether!
