Dhan-te-dhen……here it is, one of the most eagerly awaited movie of this season is finally here! So lets see what this Kaminey is about.
Two brothers, a world apart, in complete hate with each. One in love with the over the top- Sweety, the other in love with money. One an aspiring white color-currently NGO worker, the other a small time fixer hoodlum with dreams of owning his own booking khidki at the local racetrack. One a cutely lllisper, the other ‘ph ko ph bolta hai’.
So is this a judwa bhai story? Naaah …are bhai-bhai supposed to kill each other rather than for each other? Perhaps a love story? But Sweety-Guddu story is only a side show. Maybe an action/gangster movie? But are these supposed to have a brain, except to bach up?
Well, what Bharadwaj does is phenomenal. He picks a run of the mill mainstream idea and then turns it on its head. There are no eye popping stunts, no bikini clad babes, no larger then life heroes, not even stylized villains with special punch lines. Yet we have a story so full of action that ‘sitting on the edge of the seat’ gets a new meaning. Don’t relax for a minute coz you’ll miss the crucial twist in the plot! So go watch it and watch it for:
The story: 24 hours in the life of two brother who ‘teen faal se dekha bhi nahi hai’! 24 hours in their lives, of living by their wits and having to depend upon each other! He picks an obviously Tarantinoish premise and then totally makes it his own! And then adds a dollop of Mumbai gansta and stirs in a pinch of bollywood masala, never once moving away from the kind of cinema that he has come to be associated with.
The supporting actors: Well they practically carry the movie on their very able shoulders. Mikhail, Bhope bhau, Tashi………..what a supporting STAR cast! If only bollywood directors paid half the attention to character development of their lead players.
The dialogues:To rape kiya kya maine tumhara? Shaadi 2012 main and suhaag raat 2009 main? What one liners, what dialogues! You’ll come out mouthing these with no need for context or reference.
The scenes: Watch out for those fantastically crafted scenes. That one with Bhope and Tope Bhaus, playing out a shootout! The one when the two brothers face off over the ‘guitar’. Charlie-Mikhail doing the ‘fiderman’ dance! Shahid doing the ‘desperado’ to the tune of a vintage R.D. Burman. Open mouths, bold language and close clinches are here to stay. And to hell with it all if you get an A certificate. Love is beautiful, dirty and full of s**.
Fahid Kapoor: What Iago did for the career of Saif, Guddu/Charlie would do for Shahid. He is crude, filthy, rugged with buldging biceps and consistent stammerer. And then he is cute, lisping and so easily lead. He does in this movie what he was incapable of doing in his entire career of playing cute and irritating Shahrukh Khan inspired lover boy roles. He is good, consistently.
But above all watch this one for the direction, the editing, cinematography and music. Omkara, Dev D, here comes another one to join you in the ‘new cinema’ hall of fame! S**la, aife aife kaife ho jaata hai, aur kaife kaife aife ho jaat hai!
