Couple of months back I saw this movie at Star City in Mumbai, at the behest of my wife, when it was almost the talk of the town!
I have a healthy respect towards story, craftsmanship and direction of Karan Johar, who has proved his talent in his debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Since then, he is providing great family entertainment with good story lines, music, visuals etc. and direction that is deft. Some times, stories might seem to lengthen, but keeping in mind commercial angle to cater to mass in India with different tastes, likings and leanings, perhaps that aspect can be overlooked.
KHNH has an inherent philosophy that is, life is transitory ? hence one should make the best use of it. Since this story revolves round three youngsters in a love triangle, their aspirations are reflected in one direction. Between one happy-go-lucky Rohit ( Saif Ali Khan) and other do-gooder Aman (Shahrukh Khan) is Naina (Preity Zinta), who, being a friend of Rohit, finds the better side of life i.e. being in love after coming in close contact with Aman.
The hassles of life has taken toll on most of these characters in several ways, but the zest of life Aman brings to their lives through his sincere touch and some lively demonstration make most of them feel happy by seeing the positive side of life. Naina learns the meaning of life through her true love for Aman. As it happens (should happen), Aman has to sacrifice his love in view of his short span of life (cut short by deadly disease) and presses home his point both to Rohit and Naina to convince them get married. Often seen a common story, but narration is interesting, which is why audiences get stuck throughout the movie.
Very well edited, fast paced, well crafted with excellent cinematography and lovely music; few numbers are excellent. There are several light moments ---some may have gone little overboard as a loud homour, but still the movie is well balanced and refreshing!
All have acted pretty well, some excellently in revealing emotions with great feelings, except for some silly jokes through Satish Shah. A businessman well settled in US even from strong Gujarati background will be polished enough to avoid such dictions. Perhaps this could have been displayed with subtlety.
Overall, a very good movie to watch and enjoy with entire family unlike many other movies dished out by Bollywood!
