This movie gave me tons of gham...i felt depressed after watching it coz I couldn't fathom how six of the top top top stars (ok well, atleast 4) signed up for this film. what were they thinking??????????????? it just shows that at the end of the day, even the most talented actors/actresses concede that a hit film is about costumes, locations, cinematography and NO STORY!! Everybody, bow down now to the power of the 'masala'! The inevitable formula...a few laughs, a few tears, a few histrionics, a star cast, good make up & clothes and ting!!! The cash registers are ringing! Has anyone ever heard of something called a story??????
Since 14 other member's have already written out the plot in detail, and the temptation to just cut, copy paste from them is too great (yes i'm a sinner, I admit!!), coz I just can't bear to outline the whole movie in detail here, well, hold on, actually I can, coz the movie could have finished in 15 minutes max...it goes like this...parents cant have kid, adopt one, miraculously after 9 years, the wife gets pregnant again (potential for another Astitva here btw, maybe she did her music teacher too, and her hubby was sterile!!!) (wait for kabhi infidelity, kabhi gham...coming soon to a theatre near u!). Sorry, I digress...seems to be the case with this movie, just cant keep me hooked. Anyway, so the kids grow up, adopted son rebels by marrying chandni chowk girl and family breaks up. Younger son grows up and vows to make things okay and obviously succeeds (there WAS potential for more khushi more gham here since he fell for ex chandi chowk girl who went to phoren land and turned into Alicia Silverstone (from clueless) ...oh whatevvver!!!)
This movie is VERY boring...unnecessary songs, and most of them aren't even good, Sharukh needs to get his neck checked up, coz it kept on shaking when he tried to do his emotional scenes, like it was dislocated or something. Hrithik looked like he wanted to become a top model coz he kept on sucking in his cheeks! Kajol was kinda funny (i found her antics more embarrassing than endearing though) and Kareina wasn't all that bad as Alicia Silverstone part 2...she tried her best to look super sexy...almost got there!! Amitabh and Jaya weren't too bad either. I guess the cast wasn't actually the problem, in fact the performances, given the scope, were fairly good. The only problem was the story, or rather the lack of it.
Maybe i'm being unnecessarily harsh. I mean, the first half wasn't all bad. The motoo who played Hrithik Roshan as a kid was really funny, he cracked me up! But what was pathetic was that the 13, 14 year old changed into Hrithik Roshan after 10 years and the li'l girl from Chandni Chowk (Kajol's sister) turned into Kareina Kapoor, but there was ZERO change in Amitabh, Jaya, Kajol and Sharukh! I don't know which anti ageing creams they were using, it should be made public coz they sure as hell worked!! I mean, if Jaya and Amitabh were supposed to be 50 when Sharukh decided to marry Kajol, then please explain how after 10 years, their hair had the same amount of white in it, how there weren't any extra wrinkles?? From 50 to 60, a person changes drastically, especially after such a tragedy tears your family apart...but not the great film stars, I suppose.
And on top of that, the film goes back 10 years...to 1991 I suppose...someone, PLEASE explain how Amitabh was using a Nokia communicator (i think it was a 9110) TEN YEARS BACK???? and how come Rani Mukherjee's clothes were not the least bit 1990ish? there was NO change in colour, clothes or make up to suggest that we have just gone back 10 years.
There's a lot more, u know...Nandini (Jaya) plays the supressed wife who worships her husband, who shuts her up everytime. There is no respect for her opinions, Mr. Raichand decides whats law in the household. She doesn't even say anything when her son is kicked out, she doesn't make ANY attempt to call him, nor does her son try to get in touch with her. If its all about loving your parents, then where was all that love when the mom spent a decade crying over her son being separated from her. And suddenly after 10 years, she tells off her husband! If she had done that a decade earlier, then all of this could have been avoided!
And how ridiculous is it for all of the goris in some uni in London to start singing ''who's he'' when they see Hrithik Roshan? And how about when Kareena dumps her date for Hrithik at some club and starts singing ''you are my soniya'' and instead of walking out, u see the date dancing with the extra's????!!!!!!!!!!! seriously!!!
Honestly, the movie wasn't bad, its okay if u dont mind overlooking all these flaws. But I guess now that i'm hooked onto mouthshut, I tend to dissect each movie like a true reviewer:), and its very difficult for me to swallow such stuff.
My advice? go watch it, coz if you are as hooked onto this site as I am, then you are going to LOVE this movie for all the opportunities it presents to be torn apart!!!
p.s: I also hated the references to Kuch kuch hota hay, by bringing in practically the same cast, playing the tune during the movie, and having the cute li'l sardar kid counting stars again! Even Sharukh and Kajol's characters had the same names . And Rani Mukherjee did Kajol's role here initially, the bestfriend who's in love with 'Rahul'. I mean, seriously, what happened to originality?!!!
