Well Before I start with this review let me tell u a few things first , I am not a fan of the normal bollywood films . Sure I liked Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , DDLJ n a few other similar movies but they never effect me as much as compared to other films like Satya , Khamoshi or even entertainers like Rangeela .But K3g is something different and I will give u my reasons as to why I loved this ''typical bollywood'' movie and also where most of u people missed the point . Films , in general , are made to tell a story , give out a message or simply to entertain . K3G was made for pure entertainment . The trailors promoted the movie by saying ''its all about loving your parents '' . That for me is meaningless . This movie was never meant to tell a story or to convey something . The plot is as predicatable as you can get but Karan Johar never wanted to make a movie about a family , their troubled lives and how they overcome the difficulties . It was made purely with the intention of bringing some of the greatest stars of indian cinema and celebrate bollywood. It had all the scenes ,situations ,emotions you have seen all through the decade starting with maine pyar kiya and ending with grand finale (as karan johar himself made this point) K3G.And Karan Johar succeeds in doing this magnificiently .
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a well made movie but it looked a bit amateurish but with K3G Karan Johar shows that not only can he extract excellent performances but also proves that he has an equal command over the technical aspects of a film. There are various reasons as to why I consider this film to be great . Most of all is the performance . Karan Johar pulled in 5 great actors (leaving out Kareena of course ) and made each one of them give out one of their most memorable performances ever . Amitabh Bachchan is extraordinary . He displays the emotions of a father , a loving husband and the simmering anger with amazing natural ease .He never expresses his emotions verbally , its more through his body language . You just cannot take your eyes of him .Jaya Bachchan moves you to tears especially during her scenes with Rahul . She uses her eyes and her silence to show her inner feelings beautifully .Shah Rukh Khan , who tends to be repititive in his performances and also hams in some movies , gives one of his best performances of his career . He is terrific in the movie be it the romantic scenes with kajol , the emotional scenes with his parents and his brother or the funny scenes with Pooja and Anjali in the second half . Kajol unfortunately overacts inthe first half but thankfully she is in form in the second half and proves that she is amongst the best female actors of all time . Hrithik Roshan is ultra cool .His dancing especially in '' deewana hai dekho '' is superb . But he is not just about looks n dancing , he can act too . And it is clearly visible during his interactions with Rahul and his ''mamu'' (Farida Jalal) (and he once again proved it with Koi Mil Gaya) . Kareena actually has put in a good performance as well but then I guess its because she has played a charecter that is very much like her true self. Besides the main cast there are other excellent suporting performances from Rani Mukherjee and Farida Jallal .
The film has many memorable scenes . To cite a few , the scene where the father invites his son to his office for the first time , the many scenes where Rahul and Rohan interact with each other in the second half and the hillarious scenes between Rahul and Anjali mocking each other reminiscence of their previous encounters in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Also the secene where Nandini explaons to her husband that a pati is not a parmeshwar after all .The songs ''shava shava'' and ''bole choodiyan '' are pure delight .
Besides the drama , the film is visual treat as well . The palatial Raichan house , Chandni Chowk , the costumes are mind blowing . Thanks to the set designer sharmista roy , the cinematographer ketan Deohan ,dance choreograohy from Farah Khan and good music from Jatin -Lalit , Sandesh Shandaliya and Aadesh Srivastav .
On the flip side the scene where Rahuls son sings the National Anthem in London is very cheesy and could have been avoided. Also one cannot understand why Yashvardhan would be against Anjali when he could pick someone from the streets and accept him as his son . Also Rahul constantly annoying Rohan and reminding him that mom loves him more than she loves Rohan is wrong .Not the right way to grow up a child. But all these are minor mistakes in a film which is rich with emotions .
After watching this film people are like how can a young shah rukh drink coke when there was none at that time , the kid rohan doesnt have 6 fingers but he does when he grows up ,he goes to do his mba but he never studies , etc . But Karan Johar never meant to make a film which wants to convey a message , the film was never meant to be logical , it was made for sheer entertainment and it absolutely succeeds in doing so. Its dream cinema , take it or leave it .
I consider K3G to be a much better film than all the other mass entertainers be it the dilwales , hum apkes or for that matter even Kuch kuch hota hai though these films are very much responsible for K3G to be made . Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham is the epitome of Hindi commercial cinema .
